Chad Brown trainees are plentiful in stakes at Belmont Park this weekend, and the highlight could come in the $100,000 Intercontinental Stakes (G3T) in which his four entries are topped by 2018 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T) winner Newspaperofrecord.
A field of 11 older fillies and mares and one main-track-only entry were drawn for the seven-furlong Intercontinental, the eighth race on the Runhappy Carter Handicap (G1) undercard.
Newspaperofrecord did not win in three starts as a 3-year-old in 2019—although she was the runner-up in two grade 3 races—and will be making her first start since finishing last in the 1 1/4-mile Belmont Oaks Invitational Stakes (G1T) in July. Brown said the Lope de Vega filly is ready to get back on track after being off for 11 months.
"She's been training really well," Brown said. "It's a good distance to start her back. We'll look at stretching her out to a mile and not go past that distance."
Owned by Klaravich Stables, Newspaperofrecord will have her regular rider, Irad Ortiz Jr., aboard when they leave post 5.
Brown's Viadera drew the rail, Regal Glory has post 7, and last year's Intercontinental winner, Significant Form, bookends the group of stablemates from the outside post.
Juddmonte Farms' group 3-placed Viadera was imported to the U.S. from Great Britain in December and will make her first start for the Eclipse Award-winning trainer.
The British-bred daughter of Bated Breath has three wins in nine starts, primarily in Ireland, where she won a stakes in July. She finished off the board in her most recent start Sept. 14 at Leopardstown.
"She's more of a mile type," Brown said. "She's a very high-quality horse with a top-notch pedigree."
Viadera comes from the same family as four-time group 1 winner Twice Over. The 4-year-old filly will be piloted by Joel Rosario.
Paul Pompa Jr.'s Regal Glory last raced in the Oct. 12 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Presented by Lane's End (G1T) at Keeneland, where she finished sixth. But that race was an anomaly for the 4-year-old Animal Kingdom filly, who finished first or second in her first seven starts.
She will be ridden by Jose Ortiz, who rode her in her first four starts before Luis Saez took over.
Stephanie Seymour Brant's Significant Form will also make her season debut. She won three graded stakes last year at 4 and closed the season with a seventh-place finish in the one-mile Matriarch Stakes (G1T) at Del Mar.
Christophe Clement entered the German-bred Rose Flower, whose stakes win came in France. The Dabirsim filly owned by Athlone Racing placed third in two New York stakes last year and won an allowance optional claiming race at Belmont in October.
She breaks from post 9 with Manny Franco aboard.
Three Diamonds Farm's Jakarta could provide competition to the more proven horses in the field. Trained by Mike Maker, the 5-year-old Bustin Stones mare comes into the race off three consecutive wins, including an upset in the one-mile Powder Break Stakes May 16 at Gulfstream Park.
The Pennsylvania-bred has a record of 6-2-1 from 11 starts and is making her third outing for her current connections, who purchased her for $35,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December Mixed Sale.
