Sassy Gal breaks her maiden at Ruidoso Downs

R. Lee Lewis' homebred Sassy Gal won at first asking June 13 at Ruidoso Downs and represented the first winner for her sire, Marking.

Trained by Todd Fincher, Sassy Gal was the 3-5 favorite in the five-furlong maiden special weight for New Mexico-bred 2-year-old fillies. She stalked the pace in second under jockey Alfredo Juarez Jr. before edging Jasmine Baby, her stablemate, by a neck at the wire. It was 11 lengths back to the rest of the field. The time was :58.77 on a fast track. 

Sassy Gal is a third-generation homebred for Lewis. She is out of the Bernstein mare Promised Pleasure.

Marking, a grade 1-placed son of Bernardini , entered stud in 2017 at A & A Ranch near Anthony, N.M. The Godolphin homebred was trained by Kiaran McLaughlin and won on debut as a 3-year-old at Belmont Park in September 2015. He then captured a one-mile allowance by 5 1/2 lengths at Aqueduct Racetrack before finishing second to Runhappy  in the Malibu Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park

At 4, Marking made three starts in Dubai, where he won a handicap, and returned stateside for two more starts. His final race resulted in a head loss to A. P. Indian in the Belmont Sprint Championship Stakes (G3). He was retired with three wins and a pair of seconds from eight starts and earnings of $426,200.

The bay is out of the multiple grade 1-winning Street Cry mare Seventh Street, whose Tapit  daughter Lake Avenue won the Demoiselle Stakes (G2) in December.
