Minshall Farms' Ontario homebred Lion of the Sea made a successful debut and represented the first winner for freshman stallion Reload June 14, dueling to win a CA$117,126 (US$86,205) maiden special weight on Woodbine's Tapeta track.
Under jockey Leo Salles, the 2-year-old gelding led wire-to-wire and completed 4 1/2 furlongs on a fast track in :52. He won by three-quarters of a length at 18-1, taking home CA$76,080 ($55,996) in prize money.
Lion of the Sea, trained by Barbara Minshall, is the third winner from four runners out of the Rockport Harbor mare Harbour Vixen.
Phipps Stable's Reload, by Hard Spun , was bred in Kentucky out of the graded stakes-placed Mr. Prospector mare Hidden Reserve. He is a three-quarters brother to grade 3 winner Defer (Danzig) and a half brother to grade 3 winner Philanthropist (Kris S.).
Reload, trained by Shug McGaughey, won the Canadian Turf Stakes (G3T) at Gulfstream Park at 5 and the Tampa Bay Stakes (G3T) at Tampa Bay Downs at 7. In his 24th and final start, the chestnut finished fourth in the Maker's 46 Mile Stakes (G1T) at Keeneland behind grade 1 winners Miss Temple City, Heart to Heart , and Tourist . He was retired with an 8-4-3 record and earnings of $567,504.
Reload began his stud career in 2017 at Northern Dawn Stables near Hillsburgh, Ontario. He stands for CA$3,000.
