Taylor Made Stallions' first-crop sire Not This Time is the reigning commercial leader of his sire class. Strong results at the recently concluded Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training put him at the top by gross and average not only for the Spring sale, but for the cumulative results from both OBS sales so far this year.
Twenty-one juveniles by the 6-year-old son of Giant's Causeway were offered at OBS Spring, of which 20 sold for $4,109,000 in gross sales with a $205,450 average. Not This Time was the only sire with an average above $200,000, and one of five with a six-figure average from three or more sold during the four-day auction.
Not This Time's top seller was a filly (Hip 1254) out of the Wilko grade 3 winner Sheza Smoke Show that rocked a :20 1/5 quarter-mile during the under tack show, the fastest work at the distance. Bloodstock agent Gary Young paid $1.35 million for the filly consigned by Top Line Sales.
Three horses at this sale brought seven-figure prices. The others were a Quality Road colt (Hip 1018) that agent Ben McElroy bought for $1.25 million on behalf of Arman Shah out of the Wavertree Stables consignment, and a Speightster colt named Fortunate Son (Hip 1312) out of the stakes-placed Indian Charlie mare Auspicious that Larry Best's OXO Equine bought for $1.1 million from Tom McCrocklin's consignment. The Quality Road colt, a half brother to grade 1-placed stakes winner Standard Deviation (Curlin ), worked a quarter-mile in :20 3/5, and Fortunate Son worked the same distance in :20 4/5.
From 25 sold out of 31 offered at the OBS Spring and OBS March 2-Year-Olds in Training sales, Not This Time's sale 2-year-olds averaged $185,080. In the OBS March sale alone, Not This Time ranked seventh in his sire class by average price. He was one of seven sires in March with a six-figure average from three or more sold.
Other sires who have maintained six-figure cumulative averages since March include Claiborne Farm's Runhappy ($153,100), Airdrie Stud's Upstart ($137,357), WinStar Farm's Speightster ($132,450), Darley's Frosted ($112,294), and Ashford Stud's Air Force Blue ($109,464).
A freshman sire whose average improved significantly between March and June is two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome , who now stands in Japan. His March average was $47,500 from two sold out of two offered. In June, however, his average jumped to $100,906 from 16 sold out of 18 offered. Four six-figure juveniles represented the son of Lucky Pulpit at the Spring sale, led by a $725,000 colt (Hip 1298) that West Bloodstock bought from Wavertree on behalf of Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable. The colt's dam, Diva Style, is a half sister to this year's leading Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) contender Tiz the Law (Constitution ).
Among all sires represented at the 2-year-olds sales so far this year, seven have averages above $200,000 and four have averages above $300,000.
Lane's End's Quality Road is at the top with a $384,500 average from six sold out of 10 offered. The other sires with cumulative averages above $300,000 are Darley's Medaglia d'Oro ($366,667), Gainesway's late Empire Maker ($332,857), and Ashford Stud's American Pharoah ($303,333).
