Inside the Trip: Breeders' Cup Preview (también en Español)

The Breeders’ Cup pre-entries are out, and surely you are neck deep in past performances, charts, replays and more. Let’s pour some flammable data onto the fire and stoke the insight to the next level, dissecting some of the compelling information collected by Trakus in various prep races for this year’s renewal.

Classic
The Jockey Club Gold Cup was a tale of one amazing trip and everyone else who ran behind runaway winner Ron the Greek. Rarely has the son of Full Mandate paired top efforts together, yet he did run a closing fourth in last year’s race over this same surface (more on that later). It was the performances of the cab-catchers at Belmont that draws our attention.
Belmont Stakes winner Palace Malice ran a game second after running wider than any throughout the race, covering 67 feet more than Ron the Greek, a distance which equates to almost eight lengths of extra ground (notably more than his margin of defeat). Third placer Flat Out covered 56 feet more than Ron the Greek, and the second-widest trip in the field. The times from 1 ¼-mile races at Belmont can emerge strange given that these races start on the turns, yielding slower first quarters and faster second quarters. This year’s renewal was no different.
Ron the Greek ran his first quarter in 24.52 seconds, and his last quarter in 24.55 seconds, which was 1.08 seconds faster than any other horse in the race. But interestingly, fifth place finisher, and Breeders’ Cup Classic contender Last Gunfighter, recorded the second-fastest final furlongs. Granted, Ron the Greek was well-wrapped by this point, but Last Gunfighter’s last eighth went in 12.99 seconds, which was faster than Flat Out (13.19) and Palace Malice (13.34). Some could figure that the well-beaten second and third finishers were also wrapped-up at the end, but both horses were still hard-driven to the finish.

Mucho Macho Man, second in last year’s Classic, covered the widest trip in a scintillating Awesome Again Stakes, propelling him back to major contender status after a limited 2013 campaign. Trainer Kathy Ritvo knew her son of Macho Uno loved Santa Anita and wasted no time in prepping him on site. Mucho Macho Man ran the final three furlongs in 36.85 seconds, which was 0.45 seconds faster than the next fastest finisher, Paynter.

On paper, there is no doubting the competition of the Jockey Club Gold Cup was superior to that of the Awesome Again Stakes, but for as ground-saving a trip Ron the Greek had at Belmont, Mucho Macho Man’s trip was the opposite – wide throughout. In what feels like an unusual occurrence, five of last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic runners are due back in the 2013 edition, including the full slate of horses that produced a $1 superfecta return of $1,763. Fort Larned, whose Classic title defense is, right or wrong, one of the least-hyped prospects in recent memory, had a monumental trip, compared to a wide-racing Mucho Macho Man. Game On Dude may have been tired from a longer campaign, but he did cover one of the widest journeys in the race. Still, the top four all return, and all having won big races again this season. Add in the likes of Graydar, the resilient Paynter, and leading international contender Declaration of War (who is a winner of all three of his lifetime starts off grass), plus this season’s remaining 3-year-olds and…boom. What a Classic!
Speaking of the sophomore class, we would be remiss if we did not mention Will Take Charge. The regally-bred winner of the Travers Stakes and Pennsylvania Derby was perhaps the unluckiest runner from this year’s Kentucky Derby. Moving as fast as Orb was in the late stages of the race, Will Take Charge ran into the tiring Verrazano and just like that, dreams of another D. Wayne Lukas Derby winner fizzled like many others before.
Juvenile Fillies/Juvenile Fillies Turf
There is little doubt that My Conquestadory has been incredibly impressive in two lifetime starts, both in graded stakes company, beating the boys in her career debut in the Summer Stakes at Woodbine, then the girls in the Darley Alcibiades at Keeneland. Much was discussed about her troubled trip in the Alcibiades when forced to check on several occasions (four by our count). This kept her stymied in traffic as the race progressed before getting the gaps and exploding away from the field.
If you like My Conquestadory in either the Juvenile Fillies Turf or Juvenile Fillies, you have to at least consider Alcibiades second-placer Rosalind wherever she lands (cross-entered in both races). This daughter of Broken Vow was no less than four wide throughout the Alcibiades, and actually recorded a final sixteenth .12 seconds faster than My Conquestadory in that race. Overall, Rosalind covered the second-widest trip in the Alcibiades, going 55 feet more than My Conquestadory. At the finish, the margin between the two was 1 ¾ lengths, but the actual difference in ground coverage equates to going 6 ½ lengths more than her well-regarded rival.
The data suggests to us that My Conquestadory’s trip in the Alcibiades may have actually helped her. Aside from these slight checks in that bulky field, her two lifetime starts have given her relatively clear passage to the lead when asked to run. To her credit, of the males she defeated in the Summer Stakes, as of October 24, they are a combined 1-1-1 from five subsequent starts, the win coming from Summer-third Matador in last week’s Cup & Saucer Stakes at Woodbine.
Juvenile Turf
Poker Player rallied late to catch Bashart and Bon Accord in the Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland, rained off the grass and moved to the Polytrack. All three re-emerge in a contentious renewal of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, but we wouldn’t be taking about them if there weren’t some clear inequalities from that race. Poker Player saved ground and had a completely clean trip doing so, angling out in the last portion of the far turn and running down the aforementioned horses, each of whom covered heaps of extra ground and checked or shuffled amongst rivals at various points.
Bashart was second in the Bourbon, covering 40 feet more than Poker Player, while Bon Accord went 54 feet more. Both were beaten only a length. Those extra distances equate to roughly 4 ¾ and 6 ½ lengths of added ground, respectively, likely impacting their performance to some degree. While all three horses are likely to be big prices on the tote, Bashart and Bon Accord could spice up the trifecta and superfecta at boxcar odds with better trips.
Filly & Mare Turf / Turf
One has to put these races together for one reason: The Fugue. Holding entries in both, the John Gosden trainee is most likely to face the boys over 1 ½ miles. Before we wax poetic about her wins in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks or the Red Mills Irish Champion Stakes, the conversation has to focus on her run in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
Saving all the ground behind eventual winner Zagora, jockey William Buick was without running room for the vast majority of the final three furlongs. It’s worth noting in the replays of her last two wins that The Fugue was never worrying for space in those races, both over left-handed courses with stretch runs much longer than the short run-in at Santa Anita (the stretch is more than a half-mile at York, over two furlongs at Leopardstown). Ramon Dominguez, riding Zagora, simply got the break sooner and The Fugue was hemmed in behind a fading rival and Marketing Mix, who seemingly blocked her without foul in the final furlong.
No matter the race she contests (although it seems the Turf is more likely), she will be a short price. Are there others in either race with claims? Absolutely. Let’s focus on the fillies first.
Could Qushchi be a monumental longshot placer in the Filly & Mare Turf? We think so.
Aside from the fact that she has never been worse than two lengths back in six American starts, all with Lasix, this daughter of classy sire Encosta de Lago endured a brutal trip in the Flower Bowl Invitational. With no pace to run into, she still finished fourth behind front-runner Laughing, covering 44 feet more than the front-running winner. Traveling an extra 44 feet approximates to an extra five lengths, but was beaten only two.
The first three home in Santa Anita’s Rodeo Drive Stakes are likely renew their rivalry. Tiz Flirtatious was nothing short of sensational behind a slow pace, exploding in the final stages to catch Marketing Mix and Vionnet. Take note of the final sectionals recorded for each of the four horses from the Rodeo Drive expected back into the Filly & Mare Turf.

Yes, you read that correctly. Tiz Flirtatious ran the last six furlongs in 1:09.09. Only a race at about 6 ½ furlongs on the downhill turf had a faster first six-furlong split on the entire 11-race fixture that day. Behind an even slower pace at Del Mar in August’s John C Mabee Stakes, Tiz Flirtatious came home the easiest of winners, but ran the final six furlongs in only 1:12.20. The comparison is not intended to be all-telling, but we think these California-based turf fillies may be better than some would otherwise suggest.
Focusing on the Turf, Little Mike is back to defend his crown, while Point of Entry is back (just back), and some other big race winners in Big Blue Kitten, Indy Point, Real Solution, and others join the fray. Let there be no doubt that Little Mike is routinely knocked and rarely appreciated for his gritty ability to see it out. The turf courses at Belmont Park are definitely different than the Santa Anita, which featured his signature win.

Little Mike saved ground for most of the Breeders’ Cup Turf last year, but covered plenty of it in his Joe Hirsch Turf Classic success. The son of Spanish Steps covered the widest trip, while narrow second Big Blue Kitten went 45 feet less than Little Mike, the equivalent of 5 ¼ lengths shorter. Third placer Real Solution, winner of this year’s Arlington Million via disqualification, covered a trip similar to Little Mike’s and might be the more intriguing of the two Ken Ramsey-owned runners.
Mile
We highly recommend you go watch last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile just one more time.
Could Wise Dan have experienced a more perfect trip?
While he had every excuse last time off a very wide trip, a deluge, a race moved from the turf to the Polytrack, America’s reigning Horse of the Year reminded the world he has some vulnerability, lest they forget that after winning nine consecutive graded races.
A wide draw in a bigger field than a season ago could spell trouble for Wise Dan. Last time at Keeneland in the Shadwell Turf Mile (run as the Shadwell Polytrack 1 1/16 Miles), the son of Wiseman’s Ferry was wide from the start, covering 41 feet (the equivalent of 4 ¾ lengths) more than winner Silver Max. Beaten just 1 ¼ lengths, the trip is well worth considering to have had some impact on the result. Wise Dan will be favored, and should be, but there are reasons to think he is far from invincible.
Want to go way off the radar with a big longshot in the Breeders’ Cup Mile? How about He Be Fire N Ice?
The John Sadler trainee has four wins and two seconds (beaten a combined one length) from his last six turf races, with both of those placings coming amongst quality company, the Del Mar Mile and the City of Hope Mile. This California-bred will be a massive price, but he did have some legitimate excuses last time out, covering 23 feet more than winner No Jet Lag when beaten a half-length. He also ran the fastest final two and one-furlong segments. By comparison, he ran 45 feet more than Wise Dan did in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile from the same true rail setting and distance at Santa Anita.

Game On Dude pueda que haya estado cansado después de una larga campaña, pero él sí cubrió uno de los recorridos más abiertos en la carrera. Enfocándonos en el Turf, Little Mike regresa a defender su corona, mientras que Point of Entry vuelve (acaba de regresar), y algunos otros ganadores grandes como Big Blue Kitten, Indy Point, Real Solution y otros, se unen a la contienda. No quede duda que Little Mike es rutinariamente desestimado y casi nunca apreciado por su habilidad de rendir. Las pistas de césped de Belmont Park son definitivamente diferentes que las de Santa Anita, donde logró su mejor conquista.

Little Mike ahorró terreno en gran parte del Breeders’ Cup Turf el último año, pero cubrió mucho de ello en su triunfo en el Joe Hirsch Turf Classic. El hijo de Spanish Steps fue el que corrió más abierto, mientras se ubicó segundo de Big Blue Kitten quien recorrió 45 pies menos que Little Mike, el equivalente de 5 ¼ cuerpos menos. El tercer clasificado Real Solution, ganador del Arlington Million este año vía distanciamiento, cubrió un recorrido similar al de Little Mike y quizá sea el más intrigante de los pupilos del propietario Ken Ramsey.

Altamente recomendamos que vaya a ver la repetición del ultimo Breeders’ Cup Mile una vez más.
Pudo Wise Dan haber tenido un desarrollo más limpio?
Mientras tuvo todas las excusas la vez pasada corriendo abierto, el diluvio, el haberse pasado la carrera del césped al Polytrack, el Caballo del Año de EE.UU. le recordó al mundo que tiene vulnerabilidad, para no olvidar luego que ganó nueve clásicos de grado en forma consecutiva.
Un cajón abierto en un lote más numeroso que del último año puede poner en problemas a Wise Dan. La ultima vez en Keeneland en el Shadwell Turf Mile (tramitado como el Shadwell Polytrack sobre una milla y 1/16), el hijo de Wiseman’s Ferry corrió abierto desde la partida, cubriendo 41 pies (el equivalente de 4 ¾ cuerpos) más que el ganador Silver Max. Derrotado sólo por 1 ¼ cuerpos, el desarrollo vale la pena considerar ya que pudo haber tenido un considerable impacto en el resultado. Wise Dan será favorito, y debería serlo, pero hay razones para pensar que está lejos de ser invencible.

El entrenado por John Sadler tiene cuatro triunfos y dos segundos (derrotado por un combinado de un cuerpo) en sus últimas seis salidas en el césped, con los dos placés llegando ante ejemplares de calidad, el Del Mar Mile y el City of Hope Mile. Este caballo criado en California pagará un gigantesco dividendo, pero sí tuvo algunas excusas legítimas la vez pasada, recorriendo 23 pies más que el ganador No Jet Lag cuando fue derrotado por medio cuerpo. También corrió los últimos 500 metros más rápidos. Por comparación, él corrió 45 pies más que los que Wise Dan recorrió el año anterior en el Breeders’ Cup Mile desde la misma baranda y distancia en Santa Anita.
