Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T) winner Tourist was represented by his first winner July 1 at Emerald Downs as his juvenile daughter Kactus Kate scored by two lengths on debut in a maiden special weight over eight other fillies.
Off at 15-1 in the 4 1/2-furlong test, Oak Crest Farm's homebred Kactus Kate sat off the pace in second through an opening quarter-mile in :22.87, then took over the lead for a half-mile in :46.47 before hitting the wire in :52.82 on a fast track. She was ridden to victory by Javier Matias for trainer David Martinez.
Kactus Kate took home $10,175 of the $19,340 purse.
The bay filly was bred in Kentucky out of the Woodman mare Desert Liaison, also an Oak Crest homebred. She is a half sister to Frizette Stakes (G1) winner Sutra (by Meadowlake) and black-type winner Karula (by Colonel John, a son of Tiznow like Tourist).
Tourist was trained by Bill Mott and campaigned in partnership with his breeder, WinStar Farm, and partners Wachtel Stable and Gary Barber. He earned black-type wins at 3 and 4 but shined at 5 when taking the Fourstardave Handicap (G1T) at Saratoga Race Course and closing his career with a half-length victory over Tepin in the 2016 Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita Park. He collected $2,170,340 in earnings from a 6-3-4 record in 18 starts.
Tourist was produced from the Unbridled's Song mare Unbridled Melody, who is also the dam of stakes winners Michael With Us, Mountain Music Man, and Harlan's Harmony. He entered stud at WinStar in 2017 and stands for $7,500.
