Garoppolo wins a maiden race at Belmont Park

WinStar Farm's freshman sire Outwork  was represented by his first winner when Garoppolo took a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight early on the July 3 Belmont Park card.

The 2-year-old colt ridden by Luis Saez settled off the pace in third as the lone filly in the field, Beautiful Farewell, led through a quarter-mile in :22.30. The filly held on to the lead until Indoctrinate put a head in front to post a half-mile in :45.73.

The three were nearly on even terms coming off the turn as Saez moved Garoppolo up on the outside of Beautiful Farewell and Indoctrinate fought along the rail. Garoppolo moved past the leader on the outside to gain a one-length score, finishing the distance in 1:04.45 on a fast track. Winfromwithin got up for second, and Beautiful Farewell was third.

Trained by Kelly Breen for Mr. Amore Stable, Garoppolo made his debut June 3 but placed fourth behind highly touted colts Prisoner and Fauci.

Bred in Kentucky by Woodford Thoroughbreds, Garoppolo is out of the stakes-placed Cuvee mare Romantic Cuvee, who has produced four winners from as many foals. Mr. Amore Stable paid $125,000 for the colt out of the Pick View consignment to the Ocala Breeders' Sales March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.

WinStar Farm purchased the breeding rights to Outwork before his retirement. The son of Uncle Mo  only made five starts for trainer Todd Pletcher, winning his first two efforts prior to placing second in the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (G2). He came back to win the Wood Memorial Stakes (G1), and in his final start he finished 14th in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).

A homebred for Repole Stable, Outwork is out of the Empire Maker mare Nonna Mia, a grade 1-placed half sister to grade 2 winner and sire Cairo Prince .
