Gelfenstein Farm and Andry Blanco's $100,000 Mystic Lake Derby entrant Angelus Warrior is among a trio of Mike Maker trainees scheduled for stakes action on Canterbury Park's July 15 card. Florent Geroux is named to ride all three.
Angelus Warrior is the 9-5 morning-line favorite for the mile turf feature that drew six other sophomores. The Jersey Town colt won over the same surface and distance last out in a June 18 allowance at Churchill Downs, getting up for a half-length score despite coming out in the stretch.
He shortened up from 1 1/8 miles in another Churchill allowance May 30 to finish second. One start earlier, when he was trained by Bernardo Lopez, Angelus Warrior was second beaten a neck in a one-mile allowance optional claiming event Dec. 13 on the Tampa Bay Downs turf.
Kevin Marko, Last Call Racing Partnership, Union Park Thoroughbreds, and Cherrywood Racing Stables Summer Assault is the 5-2 second choice. The Summer Front gelding trained by Michele Boyce won on debut Jan. 10 at Tampa Bay Downs sprinting five furlongs on the turf and ran four other times at the Florida oval. He placed in the one-mile Columbia Stakes going a mile on the turf and won his last start May 29 by 3 3/4 lengths going 1 1/16 miles.
The field also features Roy Gene Evans' homebred Hondo Lane, who took a local June 24 allowance going six furlongs on the main track by 10 1/2 lengths. He has yet to start on turf. Shawn Davis trains the Mr. Speaker colt.
The $75,000 Mystic Lake Mile on the turf attracted nine older horses and Maker will send out Paradise Farms' Temple, winner of the Gio Ponti Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack in November. The 4-year-old Temple City gelding will try to rebound from a seventh-place finish after being checked at the quarter pole in the June 6 Fort Marcy Stakes (G2T) at Belmont Park.
The field includes Lothenbach Stables' Giant Payday, the 2017 Mystic Lake Derby winner and last year's Mystic Lake Mile third. The 6-year-old Giant's Causeway gelding trained by Joel Berndt won the Brooks Field Stakes in August at Canterbury, but has been seventh in two starts since, including his lone race this year June 17.
Super XLIV's Nobrag Justfact will try to defend his Mystic Lake Mile title as he makes his first start since finishing third to Giant Payday in the Brooks Field Stakes. Eric Heitzmann trains the 5-year-old son of The Factor , who was second in the 2018 Mystic Lake Derby.
Two last-out stakes winners were entered to make their first start at Canterbury, one of which is End Zone Athletics' Hunka Burning Love. The Karl Brogerg trainee won his fourth consecutive race in the June 28 Lone Star Mile Stakes at Lone Star Park. Team Valor International's The Black Album won the July 8 Jonathan B. Schuster Memorial Stakes at Indiana Grand for trainer Rodolphe Brisset and he was added to the July 13 Fasig-Tipton July Horses of Racing Age Sale.
The $75,000 Lady Canterbury Stakes, for fillies and mare going a mile on turf, drew 12 entries and one main track only entrant. Lothenbach Stables' Winning Envelope will try to go one better after missing by half a length in a June 19 allowance at Churchill Downs. The 4-year-old More Than Ready filly started the year for trainer Chris Block by rallying to win the Jan. 26 Jersey Lilly Turf Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park.
The $50,000 Northbound Pride Oaks is another mile turf event on Wednesday's card. Seven 3-year-old fillies, including Maker trainee Ask Bailey, are entered. WSS Racing and Hooties Racing's Run Away and Hide filly was third in the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine Stakes (G2T) at Keeneland last fall after a runner-up effort in the Exacta Systems Juvenile Fillies Stakes at Kentucky Downs. The Northbound Pride Oaks will be her first start since 10th in a Nov. 20 Churchill allowance.
Also coming from Kentucky will be Winchester Place Thoroughbreds Urban Fairytale. The Distorted Humor filly trained by Ian Wilkes broke her maiden March 29 at a mile on Gufstream Park's turf.
Novogratz Racing Stable's Defend the Rose, a First Defence filly conditioned by McClean Robertson, will stretch out and switch surfaces after winning the six-furlong Frances Genter Stakes against fellow Minnesota-breds July 1 at Canterbury.
Also on the card is the $50,000 Honor the Hero Stakes, a five-furlong turf dash. Carolyn Wilson's Wellabled tops the nine entries off a frontrunning victory in a June 27 allowance turf dash at Churchill Downs. He has won multiple stakes on synthetic surfaces but is looking for a black-type win on turf. Larry Rivelli trains the 6-year-old son of Shackleford.
