Summer Assault Earns Stakes Win in Mystic Lake Derby

Summer Assault snuck up the rail at the top of the stretch in the $100,000 Mystic Lake Derby at Canterbury Park July 15 and outran favored Angelus Warrior and Creative Plan in the lane to score by one length.

The 3-year-old Summer Front  gelding brought his record to 3-for-6 in the one-mile turf test and added his first stakes win for trainer Michele Boyce and owners Kevin Marko, Last Call Racing Partnership, Union Park Thoroughbreds, and Cherrywood Racing Stables II.

Ridden by Jareth Loveberry, Summer Assault was second out of the gate behind Plane Talk but was content to settle in third as Creative Plan moved up. Plane Talk set fractions of :23.44 and :47.68 through the first half-mile. Summer Assault was behind a wall of horses as Angelus Warrior moved up to challenge the leaders, but the rail opened and he was able to get past Plane Talk, who was laboring.

Summer Assault finished the mile on firm turf in 1:34.15, with Angelus Warrior edging Creative Plan by a head for second.

Bred in Kentucky by Brereton Jones, Summer Assault is the first stakes winner out of the unraced Include  mare Quality Included.

Canterbury's Wednesday card included four other stakes, including the $75,000 Mystic Lake Mile for 3-year-olds and up, and the $75,000 Lady Canterbury Stakes for fillies and mares, 3 and older.

Tut's Revenge took the Mystic Lake Mile, which marked his second stakes victory in 16 starts.

Under jockey Roimes Chirinos, the 4-year-old Eskendereya gelding won a three-way battle to the wire by a head over Giant Payday, who was a head better than Temple. Clinton Stuart trains Tut's Revenge for Claim To Fame Stable.

Later in the day, Streak of Luck snapped an 11-race losing streak and earned her first stakes victory in gate-to-wire fashion in the Lady Canterbury. Three-quarters of a length best at the wire, the 5-year-old daughter of Old Fashioned stopped the clock in 1:34.85.
