Cowboy Diplomacy, a full brother to champion Monomoy Girl, won for the first time July 18 by capturing a $37,000 maiden special weight at Ellis Park by 4 1/2 lengths.
The 4-year-old son of Tapizar out of the Henny Hughes mare Drumette competed for the first time since going to the sidelines in April 2019 after three races at Oaklawn Park. He tracked the pace three wide in third under Shaun Bridgmohan before decisively pulling away down the stretch. He completed six furlongs on a fast track in 1:09.47.
Besides pedigree, Cowboy Diplomacy ($13) shares other similarities with Monomoy Girl. A fellow chestnut, he, like Monomoy Girl, is trained by Brad Cox and partially owned by Sol Kumin.
Kumin's Madaket Stables owns Cowboy Diplomacy with Pocket Aces Racing, and Monomoy Girl runs for Michael Dubb, The Elkstone Group, Bethlehem Stables, and Monomoy Stables—the latter another stable partnership headed by Kumin.
Bred in Kentucky by FPF and Highfield Ranch, Cowboy Diplomacy was a $175,000 yearling purchase by Marc Wampler, the racing manager for Pocket Aces Racing, from the Gainesway consignment in 2017 at The October Sale, Fasig-Tipton's fall yearling sale in Lexington. He became the fifth winner for his dam, who also produced Mr. Monomoy (by Palace Malice ), a winner this year of a division of the Risen Star Stakes Presented by Lamarque Ford (G2) at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
Mr. Monomoy, also trained by Cox, is owned by Madaket, Dubb, and Doheny Racing Stable.
