Big On Big wins on debut at Belterra Park
Big On Big led at every point of call in his debut July 28 at Belterra Park to become the first winner for Spendthrift Farm's freshman sire Cinco Charlie .
Daniel and Patricia Yates' homebred colt set early fractions of :22.40 and :47.26 while leading by a half-length in the six-furlong maiden special weight for Ohio-bred 2-year-olds. With Joseph Ramos in the irons, Big On Big opened up by two lengths in the stretch and fended off late-running Brig to win by 1 1/2 lengths. The final time on the fast surface was 1:15.04
The William Cowens trainee picked up $12,960 for his winning effort.
Big On Big is the third foal out of the Corinthian mare Justoneatheguys and is a half brother to stakes-placed Sister's Creed (by Spendthrift's Jimmy Creed ). He was a $27,000 buy back from Sheppell Thoroughbreds' consignment at last year's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearlings Sale.
Cinco Charlie, a son of Indian Charlie—Ten Halos (by Marquetry), was bred in Kentucky by Candyland Farm. Stakes-placed Ten Halos is a half sister to Super Derby (G2) winner My Pal Charlie and Amsterdam Stakes (G2) victor Bwana Charlie, both by Indian Charlie. Candyland sold Cinco Charlie at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton Milantic Easter Fall Yearlings Sale for $75,000 to Cary Frommer, who then sold the colt for $190,000 to B & C Horses at the 2014 Ocala Breeders' Sales March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.
Owners Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt placed Cinco Charlie in training with Steve Asmussen and the bay earned six black-type victories, topped by the Bashford Manor Stakes (G3), while racing from 2 to 4. He retired with an 8-2-4 record from 18 starts and earnings of $608,920.
Cinco Charlie entered stud at Spendthrift near Lexington in 2017 and has stood for $5,000 since.
