Seven 2-year-old fillies are slated to enter the gate Aug. 7 for the six-furlong Sorrento Stakes (G2) at Del Mar, and trainer James Chapman has three chances in the $150,000 race.
Those three fillies have each raced at different tracks across the country and will compete at Del Mar for the first time. Chapman's top prospect may be Scaterra, who romped in her debut on the all-weather track at Arlington International, defeating a field of five other fillies by seven lengths.
Owned by Chapman and Tritain Biddinger, the Verrazano filly has been breezing regularly at The Thoroughbred Center in Lexington, where she has posted speedy times for a half-mile four times since June 25 when she worked a bullet in :48 2/5. She most recently worked four furlongs July 22, stopping the clock in :48 3/5.
Ridden in her debut by Charles Roberts, Umberto Rispoli will pick up the mount Friday and the pair will leave post 6.
To Scaterra's outside is stablemate Scat's Choice, who won in her third start July 10, a five-furlong maiden test at Belterra Park, after finishing fourth and fifth in June at Indiana Grand and Churchill Downs, respectively. The daughter of First Samurai was a $5,000 purchase by co-owners Chapman and Stuart Tsujimoto. She will be ridden by J.C. Diaz Jr. at Del Mar.
The third Chapman filly drew post 5 and will be ridden by Edwin Maldanado. Also owned by Chapman and Tsujimoto, Trip to Seoul won July 15 at Mountaineer Park after two unsuccessful starts in June at Churchill Downs. In her victory she bested a field of six other fillies by 7 1/4 lengths after leading at every point of call. The daughter of Liam's Map most recently breezed July 27, posting a bullet half-mile in :48 1/5 at The Thoroughbred Center.
Among the competition are Southern California regulars. Trainer Keith Desormeaux has entered Erich Brehm's homebred My Girl Red, who won on debut June 14, taking a 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Santa Anita by 4 1/4 lengths. The Texas Red filly has been training at Del Mar since the middle of July and Flavien Prat returns to ride from post 4.
Trainer Doug O'Neill will saddle Get On the Bus in Friday's Sorrento—the only untested filly in the group. The daughter of Uncle Mo is owned by Reddam Racing and was purchased by the trainer's brother, Dennis O'Neill, for $340,000 from the consignment of Paul Sharp to this year's Ocala Breeders' Sales March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.
Get On the Bus last worked five furlongs Aug. 2 in 1:00 2/5 on Del Mar's main track. She will be ridden from the rail by Mario Gutierrez.
Abel Cedillo will ride September Secret from post 2. The Peter Miller trainee brings experience over the track, which could play in her favor as she won her second start at Del Mar, romping by 7 3/4 lengths in a July 24 test going 5 1/2 furlongs. The Grazen filly finished ninth in her debut at Los Alamitos.
The final contestant in the Sorrento is Tricar Stables' Exchange Vows, who won her debut for trainer Sal Gonzalez July 2 at Los Alamitos. Facing maiden claiming company while going five furlongs, the daughter of Tapiture bested a field of four other fillies by three lengths while coming from off the pace. She gets the services of Asael Espinoza from post 3.
