West Point Thoroughbreds and Pearl Racing's Winning Impression will be pointed toward the Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) at Churchill Downs. The decision was announced Aug. 17 via the Twitter account of West Point Thoroughbreds.
"Winning Impression will point for (the) Kentucky Derby," read Monday's Tweet. "Know he'll be a huge longshot but Dallas Stewart longshots have come runnin' in the past. Paynter gelding has always trained well at Churchill Downs and should appreciate mile and a quarter. Joe Rocco Jr. rides."
Trained by Dallas Stewart, Winning Impression broke his maiden in December of 2019 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots. The gray or roan has made six starts in 2020 so far, his best effort coming May 2 when he placed third in a division of the Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park for which he earned 20 qualifying points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. He is 20th on the Derby leaderboard.
Winning Impression finished off the board in the July 8 Indiana Derby (G3) at Indiana Grand and most recently ran seventh in the Runhappy Ellis Park Derby Aug. 9 at Ellis Park.
Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm, Winning Impression is out of the Unbridled's Song mare Unbridled Sonya. The gelding was purchased by West Point Thoroughbreds and John Glenn for $77,000 from the consignment of Off the Hook at the 2019 Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training.
Winning Impression holds a 1-1-2 record from nine starts with earnings of $98,552.
