A colt by Lane's End Farm's Quality Road tops the list of pinhooks for Book 3 of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Consigned as Hip 1267 by Baccari Bloodstock, the bay is only the third foal out of the Brazil-bred Baruta, who won the 2015 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes (G3T) at Santa Anita Park.
Hip 1267 was purchased by Baccari Bloodstock for $225,000 from the consignment of Hidden Brook at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. The colt had been entered to the sale as a weanling on behalf of Bonne Chance Farm, who bred the colt in Kentucky in partnership with Stud RDI.
A daughter of Crimson Tide, Baruta spent the first half of her 23-start career in Brazil where she ran third in the Grande Premio Henrique de Toledo Lara (G1) and the Grand Premio Henrique Possollo-Stud TNT (G1). Transferred to the barn of Richard Mandella in 2014, the mare won the Senator Ken Maddy and placed second in the Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3) at Del Mar.
Another promising pinhook slated for Book 3 is Hip 1582, a colt by Ashford Stud's Uncle Mo consigned by Denali Stud, agent. Out of the stakes-winning Grand Slam mare Starless Night, the colt was purchased by Bradley Thoroughbreds for $200,000 from the Taylor Made Sales Agency consignment to the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale.
Hip 1582 was bred in Kentucky by ERJ Racing and is only the second foal for his dam, who has also produced an unraced Violence colt. The colt's second dam is stakes winner Victory Romance, who also placed second in the Mazarine Breeders' Cup Stakes (G3) at Woodbine.
Denali Stud will also consign the third-most expensive pinhook for Book 3 in Hip 1347, a filly by the late WinStar stallion Pioneerof the Nile. The dark bay or brown yearling was bred in Kentucky by Narola and was also pinhooked by Bradley Thoroughbreds who purchased her for $190,000 from the Lane's End consignment to the Keeneland November sale.
Hip 1347 is the fifth foal out the Florida-bred Congrats mare Emma's Encore, who won the Victory Ride Stakes (G3) at Belmont Park and Prioress Stakes (G1) Saratoga Race Course at 3 for trainer H. Allen Jerkens and owners Brenda Mercer and Peter Berglar.
