Winchell Thoroughbreds' Midnight Bourbon rolled to a 5 1/2-length victory Aug. 22 at Ellis Park to break his maiden. The 2-year-old Tiznow colt is the fourth winner from as many runners out of the Malibu Moon mare Catch the Moon.
The $46,280 maiden special weight run at a mile was the second outing Midnight Bourbon made for trainer Steve Asmussen. The bay was sent off as the 5-2 favorite in the 10-horse field off a third-place finish on debut July 25 over the same course and distance. Having grabbed the lead first time out, Midnight Bourbon was settled in second Saturday by jockey Gerardo Corrales. He sat off fractions of :23.30 and :47.15.
Midnight Bourbon took over to run six furlongs in 1:11.86 before he coasted to the finish line. He completed the mile on the fast track in 1:37.32. He has earned $31,420.
Midnight Bourbon was bred in Kentucky by Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings. He is the fourth foal out of Catch the Moon, also the dam of Iroquois Stakes (G3) winner Cocked and Loaded, Betfair.com Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) winner and Ocala Stud resident Girvin , and multiple grade 3-placed Pirate's Punch, who crossed the wire first in the Philip H. Iselin Stakes (G3) at Monmouth Park Saturday but was placed second behind Warrior's Charge for interference.
Winchell Thoroughbreds went to $525,000 to secure Midnight Bourbon from Warrendale Sales, agent for Stonestreet, at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
