While all eyes will be on the top 3-year-olds competing this weekend at Churchill Downs, some accomplished sophomores also will be on display Sept. 5 at Saratoga Race Course, where classic-placed Dr Post heads the $150,000 Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) for 3-year-olds and Frank's Rockette starts in the $200,000 Prioress Stakes (G2) for 3-year-old filly sprinters.
St. Elias Stable's Dr Post will make his first start since finishing third in the TVG.com Haskell Stakes (G1) July 18 at Monmouth Park. Before that effort, the son of Quality Road finished second to Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) morning-line favorite Tiz the Law in the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1).
"He's been training well," trainer Todd Pletcher said. "He's a high-quality colt and trains accordingly. I'm very happy with him. He showed his quality in the Belmont when he ran as close to Tiz the Law as anyone else has. He kind of had a less than ideal trip in the Haskell, but hopefully he's ready to move forward here."
Dr Post could parlay a stellar effort in the 1 1/8-mile test that has drawn seven entries into a spot in the Preakness Stakes (G1) Oct. 3 at Pimlico Race Course.
One of those challengers will be Godolphin's Mystic Guide, who will pick up blinkers after finishing third in his stakes debut, the Peter Pan Stakes (G3) July 16 at Saratoga. After tracking in second-last position, Mystic Guide rallied for third in the nine-horse Peter Pan under jockey Jose Ortiz, who will be aboard Saturday.
"He was way out the back on the backstretch and had given himself way too much to do and wasn't really running into the dirt that day," trainer Michael Stidham said. "Ortiz said every time he tried to get him going, he didn't really kick in until he swung him out turning for home. So we put the blinkers on in the morning, and he seems to be handier with them on. We're hoping he can lay a little closer and have a better chance to win by getting a better position on the backside."
Also on the Saratoga card, Frank's Rockette will look to secure her third consecutive win for owner Frank Fletcher Racing Operations. In her previous effort, the daughter of Into Mischief edged Reagan's Edge by a head to secure the first graded stakes win of her career in the Victory Ride Stakes (G3) July 4 at Belmont Park.
Those two fillies could deliver fireworks again as both are entered in the Prioress, a six-furlong test that has attracted a field of nine. Lael Stables' Reagan's Edge is trained by Cherie DeVaux, and Frank's Rockette is conditioned by Bill Mott.
