Klein Racing's Break Even, a grade 2-winning filly by Country Day, has been retired from racing after being pulled up as the 3-10 favorite in the Sept. 2 Unbridled Sidney Stakes at Churchill Downs. The 4-year-old trained by Brad Cox, bled, pulled up, and was vanned off the track.
"She's been retired," said Richard Klein, who bred the filly with his late father, Bert Klein, out of the family's Exotic Wager, by Saint Ballado. "She bled pretty severely. It was visable coming down her blaze when you watched the replay.
"She's a special filly; she's a grade 2 winner who won her first six starts," he continued. "She's by a stallion I have out of a family mare who did nothing but throw hard-knocking horses. She'll be sent to Clarkland Farm where we'll find the right stallion for her."
In Break Even's fourth start she won last year's seven-furlong Eight Belles Stakes Presented by Derby City Gaming (G2) at Churchill Downs. She later ran second in the Prioress Stakes (G2) at Saratoga Race Course. In her start before the Unbridled Sidney she was second in the six-furlong Winning Colors Stakes (G3). She went 7-2-0 in 11 starts and earned $534,000.
The 5 1/2-furlong Unbridled Sidney was won by Voodoomon Racing's Ambassador Luna.
