Absent from racing since finishing 10th in the 2019 Preakness Stakes (G1), Peter Redekop’s Anothertwistafate bids for his first graded stakes victory when he heads a field of 10 in the $100,000 Longacres Mile Handicap (G3) at Emerald Downs.

The 8-5 morning-line favorite, Anothertwistafate was on the Triple Crown trail early last year after winning the El Camino Real Derby by seven lengths. He then ran second in the Sunland Park Derby (G3) and Coolmore Lexington Stakes (G3) before faltering in the Preakness.

A 4-year-old Scat Daddy colt trained by Blaine Wright, Anothertwistafate is 3-2-0 in seven starts with $303,505 in earnings, the richest entrant in the Longacres Mile. He has been training regularly at Golden Gate Fields in Northern California, where he fired a bullet six furlongs in 1:12 2/5 Aug. 30.

“Everything has gone well. Our horse has worked lights out,” Wright told Emerald publicity. “His six-furlong works are like a mile. He gallops out strongly.”

Though Anothertwistafate is a newcomer to Emerald, Wright is not. He has been the leading stakes trainer the past three seasons at Emerald Downs, amassing 30 stakes wins since 2017, according to statistics provided by the track.

The Mile has eluded his grasp. There have been some close calls, including runner-up finishes by Alert Bay in 2018 and Anyportinastorm in 2019. Those horses are also owned by Redekop.

“I think everyone involved in this race would say the same thing, that winning the Mile means a lot,” Wright said. “It means a lot to me, Mr. Redekop, and everyone in the race.”

Anothertwistafate will break from post 4 under two-time Longacres Mile-winning jockey Juan Gutierrez. He carries 118 pounds.

Five Star General and He's the Reason bring quality form into the race from Hastings Racecourse. Five Star General captured the 2019 British Columbia Derby (G3) and is 2-for-2 at a mile, and He’s the Reason is a multiple stakes winner in Vancouver. Both are owned and trained by Glen Todd, whose Princess of Cairo stunned previously unbeaten Daffodil Sweet in the Washington Oaks last week.

Five Star General, the co-highweight with He’s the Reason at 122 pounds, is ridden by two-time Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mario Gutierrez, who is 2-for-3 in the Mile with wins on Taylor Said in 2012 and Point Piper in 2016.

Elliott Bay at 8-1 appears the top local threat. He's the lone returnee from the 2019 Longacres Mile, in which he was fifth.

The 85th renewal of the Northwest’s premier event goes as race 8 at 8:30 p.m. PT.
