Cambier Parc wins the 2019 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland

Away for almost 11 months, two-time grade 1 winner Cambier Parc returns in the CA$250,000 Canadian Stakes Presented by the Japan Racing Association (G2T) Sept. 12 at Woodbine vs. nine rivals, including the Roger Attfield-trained duo of Elizabeth Way and Art of Almost.

A daughter of Medaglia d'Oro  owned by Larry Best's OXO Equine, Cambier Parc was one of the top 3-year-old fillies in the country last year under the care of trainer Chad Brown. A specialist on turf at 1 1/8 miles—the conditions of the Canadian Stakes—she first captured the Wonder Again Stakes (G3T) at the trip before later adding the Del Mar Oaks Presented by The Jockey Club (G1T) and Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes Presented by Lane's End (G1T).

The latter race at Keeneland was her last start, way back in October. Then tucked away, she resumed breezing in July at Saratoga Race Course and has recorded seven workouts there toward her return.

Although she lacks experience racing at Woodbine, her pedigree has ties to racing north of the U.S. border. Bred in Kentucky by Bonne Chance Farm, she is out of 2007 Canadian Horse of the Year and Triple Tiara winner Sealy Hill, a producer of three other graded stakes winners, including 2014 Canadian champion sprinter Hillaby.

Rafael Hernandez will ride the 6-5 morning-line favorite for Brown, who took the Canadian Stakes in 2016 with Rainha Da Bateria.

Attfield, a Hall of Famer in both the U.S. and Canada, will look to win his fourth Canadian. He won it in 1984 with Dundrum Dancer, in 1994 with Alywow, and in 2010 with Miss Keller.

The shorter price on the morning line of Attfield's two runners is Elizabeth Way at 4-1 odds. A 4-year-old daughter of Frankel, she is enjoying a fruitful 2020 campaign, going 3-0-2 from six starts for owner John McCormack. Most recently, she ran third in a paceless Dance Smartly Stakes (G2T) behind frontrunning Theodora B.

"It wasn't her race at all," Attfield said. "She didn't really go into it as nicely as she had in all her other races. She didn't really run her race. She was running off the bridle with her head up. But at least she was third, anyway. She's coming into this one much better than she was the last one, for sure."

His other entrant, 15-1 Art of Almost, has a 3-3-4 mark from 15 starts for the ownership group of Frederick Seitz, Jon Kelly, Danny Ward, and Dr. Ted Folkerth. The diminutive 4-year-old daughter of Dansili was fourth in the Dance Smartly.

"She always tries. She's training into the race very well, actually,"  Attfield said.

Emma-Jayne Wilson will ride Elizabeth Way, and Daisuke Fukumoto will be atop Art of Almost.

The Canadian Stakes, the third leg of Woodbine's Ladies of the Lawn bonus series, is the second of three consecutive stakes at Woodbine on Saturday, with a post time of 4:51 p.m. ET. It follows the Bison City Stakes and precedes the day's showcase race, the Queen's Plate Stakes.
