Larry Best has had good success with sons of Spendthrift Farm's leading sire Into Mischief , and he picked up another for $1 million midway through the Sept. 13 opening session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Cataloged by Gainesway as Hip 121, the colt produced from the grade 2-placed Cuvee mare Curlina is a half brother to multiple grade 3-placed filly Sine Wave. The colt's third dam, stakes-placed Private Seductress, produced Italian group 1 winner Menhoubah.

Bred in Kentucky by Mulholland Springs, the colt was purchased by Brandon Garrett from his breeder for $550,000 at last year's Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

Best recently retired to stud his grade 2 winner Instagrand, an Into Mischief colt who finished third in the Santa Anita Derby (G1) and Gotham Stakes (G3), and he campaigns Into Mischief's multiple grade 1-placed son Rowayton.

"The sire is unreal," Best said of Into Mischief. "I just put Instagrand into stallion duty (at Taylor Made Stallions), so I'm betting big on Instagrand. I didn't sell him; I had offers to sell him. I put him to stud because I believe he has the potential to be an elite sire son of Into Mischief. So I'm obviously one of the biggest fans of what Spendthrift has done with Into Mischief, and my luck with Into Mischief has been good, starting with Instagrand. I do have other sires in my portfolio for this (upcoming) 2-year-old crop, but I didn't have any Into Mischiefs."

"I loved the horse and I was bidding on him in November, and when the successful bidder got him, I just told him I thought he had a chance to be a $1 million yearling," Brian Graves of Gainesway said. "Into Mischief had a great year, and this horse came back and sold well. He was a quality horse, a very correct horse bought by a smart guy who has done well with Into Mischiefs."

Best purchased one other yearling Sunday on behalf of OXO Equine. He spent $525,000 on Hip 208, a filly by Into Mischief out of the Indian Charlie mare Indian Miss. The filly is a half sister to champion sprinter Mitole , who earned over $3.1 million during his 14-start career. Mitole now stands at Spendthrift Farm.
