Shadwell Strikes Early for $700,000 Into Mischief Colt

The Into Mischief colt consigned as Hip 474 in the ring at the Keeneland September Sale
The demand for sons by Spendthrift Farm's Into Mischief continued into the Sept. 16 opening session of Book 2 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale when a bay colt by the leading sire was purchased by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum's Shadwell Estate for $700,000.
Bred in Kentucky by George Krikorian, the colt—consigned as Hip 474 by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, agent—is out of the Distorted Humor mare Acting Class, the dam of multiple graded stakes-placed winner Classy Act. His third dam, Colour Chart, won the CIGA Prix de l'Opera (G2) in France and produced champion 2-year-old filly Tempera, group 3 winner Equerry, and French stakes winner Ecole d'Art.
Shadwell vice president and general manager Rick Nichols said the colt was a standout in Book 2 and likely should have been offered during the Book 1 sessions that began the auction Sept. 13-14.
"He should have been in Book 1," Nichols said. "I'm very pleased with him. I got beat out on one the other night, and actually I liked this one better. I'm quite happy to get him."

Nichols, who said the colt would remain in the U.S. to race, noted that the absence of Sheikh Hamdan from the sale this year likely has had an effect on Shadwell's purchases.
"He sometimes doesn't stop, when I have to," Nichols said. "It definitely has some effect. I got beat out on four yearlings Monday night (Book 1 second session), and I think if he'd been here we would have owned them. I have to follow instructions. He doesn't."
At last year's Keeneland sale, Shadwell's tab totaled $11.07 million for 18 yearlings.
Through the third session, Shadwell had purchased seven yearlings for $4,245,000.
Also at the Wednesday session, Shadwell bought Hip 559, a Speightstown colt acquired for $800,000 from Elm Tree Farm, agent for Stonestreet Bred & Raised; Hip 586, a Kitten's Joy colt consigned by Dixiana Farms bought for $120,000; and Hip 707, an Honor Code filly consigned by Lane's End, agent, that was purchased for $150,000.
