Dean Martini pulls off a 14-1 upset in the Ohio Derby at Thistledown

In each of the past three years, horses who worked at Churchill Downs before the Oklahoma Derby (G3) at Remington Park were triumphant: Untrapped (2017), Lone Sailor (2018), and Owendale (2019).

The trend may continue when the $200,000 race is run Sept. 27. Churchill Downs-based Shared Sense and Dean Martini are the 5-2 and 7-2 morning-line favorites, respectively.

The sophomores have already notched grade 3 victories in 2012. Shared Sense captured the Indiana Derby (G3) at Indiana Grand July 8, and Dean Martini took the Ohio Derby (G3) at Thistledown June 27.

Both were unplaced in the Aug. 9 Runhappy Ellis Park Derby. Shared Sense ran fifth, losing by 10 3/4 lengths, while Dean Martini chased the pace and faded to sixth, beaten 12 3/4 lengths by Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) winner Art Collector.

"I was disappointed in how (Dean Martini) ran at Ellis Park," said his trainer, Tom Amoss. "He was wide, chased an extremely quick pace. Those things were disappointing to me. Looking back on it, I don't pretend for a second that he would have beaten Art Collector, but I think we cost ourselves with how he ran and being up that close."

Shared Sense rallied from last, passing tired horses.

Both 3-year-olds start for recent Oklahoma Derby-winning trainers. Amoss won with Lone Sailor, while Brad Cox, Shared Sense's trainer, took it with Owendale.

"With a 3-year-old you think has some talent, this is a great example and opportunity to run in a race that is not as difficult as another 3-year-old race that is running right now," Amoss said. "You hope you get your horse back on course, and in the case of Dean Martini, that is certainly what we would be saying because his last race—we're not going to candy-coat it—it wasn't a good race."

Dean Martini, a Cairo Prince  gelding claimed by Amoss for $50,000 at Churchill Downs in May, starts for Raise the BAR Racing and David Bernsen. David Cabrera is aboard.

Shared Sense, a son of Street Sense , is a Godolphin homebred with Richard Eramia in the saddle.

Rowdy Yates, trained by 2018 Oklahoma Derby-winning trainer Steve Asmussen, outperformed both Dean Martini and Shared Sense when fourth in the Ellis Park Derby.

Asmussen then sent him to Remington to train locally. The trainer also starts longshot Code Runner, who has been working at Saratoga Race Course.

Remington Park Oaks Headlines Supporting Action

Also Sunday are seven other stakes, the richest of which is the $100,000 Remington Park Oaks (G3) for 3-year-old fillies.

There, another Kentucky-stabled runner, Envoutante, is favored for trainer Kenny McPeek and owners Walking L Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm. The 3-year-old Uncle Mo  filly seeks her first stakes victory and drops in class after a third in the Central Bank Ashland Stakes (G1) at Keeneland and a fourth in the Alabama Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Aug. 15.

McPeek has also entered Jeweled Princess for the 1 1/16-mile race that also attracted the Simon Callaghan-trained Paige Anne from California.
