Dayoutoftheoffice wins the Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park

Dayoutoftheoffice, the 5-2 second choice in a field of six, held favored Vequist safe by two lengths to win the one-turn mile Frizette Stakes (G1) Oct. 10 at Belmont Park in 1:35.82. Longshot Cilla was 10 3/4 lengths back third on a fast track.

Trained by Timothy Hamm, the daughter of leading sire Into Mischief  races for Hamm and Siena Farm. The score, a "Win & You're In" for the Nov. 6 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), tacks on to her win July 16 in the Schuylerville Stakes (G3) at Saratoga Race Course.

Bred in Kentucky by Siena Farm, the dark bay filly is out of the Indian Charlie mare Gottahaveadream. Junior Alvarado was aboard.

The winner paid $7.80.

Joy's Rocket broke on top in the Frizette under Jose Ortiz Jr. and showed the way through an opening quarter-mile in :22.94 and a half-mile in :46.41 as Dayoutoftheoffice and Alvarado tracked while outside with Vequist tucked along the rail. Vequist, with Luis Saez up, remained inside on the bend as Dayoutoftheoffice made her way to the leader after six furlongs in 1:10.98. She was clear in the stretch while well off the fence and Vequist shook clear of the rest but was unable to cut into the winner's lead.

"I thought it (the pace) was going to be a little more contested and I was going to stalk but I felt like I was in control of the race from where I was," Alvarado said. "I knew I had the horse in front of me (measured), so I just made sure my filly got into a nice rhythm and at the same time keep everybody where I wanted them to be.

"Post position (five) had a lot to do with how she ran today because it allowed me to control the race. It was just a matter of time before she got it to the next gear and really kicked on nicely at the end."

Bred by Siena Farm, the dark bay filly is out of the Indian Charlie mare Gottahaveadream. Gottahaveadream is a half sister to grade 1 winner Here Comes Ben and is out of Chasetheragingwind, a member of a red-hot racing family. Chasetheragingwind is a half sister to Chasethewildwind, the dam of grade 1 winners Albertus Maximus  and Daredevil , the sire of last weekend's Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Swiss Skydiver.

Gottahaveadream delivered a colt by Bolt d'Oro  March 15 and has been bred to 2017 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Always Dreaming  for 2021.

"She's a big, scopey filly and I wanted to have some horse for the end of the year. The plan was to have a fresh horse for this time of the years," said Hamm who notched his first grade 1 victory.

"When you put a plan together that works -- the team of Siena Farm and myself and all our assistants -- you feel vindicated. We all thought this filly was special when she won at 4 1/2 (furlongs) because we knew she would be able to get longer than that."

That maiden win came May 14 at Gulfstream Park. Dayoutoftheoffice is three-for-three and has earned $216,500.

Paul Pompa Jr.'s Fifth Risk was scratched. It was reported earlier in the day that Pompa passed away at 62.
