David Kenney and ERJ Racing's That Kenney Kid bobbled at the break of the $63,000 West Virginia Triple Crown Nutrition Breeders' Classic Stakes Oct. 10 at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races but recovered for a one-length victory. The 2-year-old filly awarded her sire, Speightster , his first black-type victory.
After the bobble, That Kenney Kid was third early under jockey Arnaldo Bocachica and chased fractions of :23.64, :48.01, and 1:14.17 set by Shutupn'kissme. She moved up to second by the time she reached the three-eighths pole and was 2 1/2 lengths behind the pacesetter in the stretch, but closed to catch the leader and complete the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:21.33 on the fast track.
Trained by Jeff Runco, That Kenney Kid has earned $56,680 from two wins and a second in four starts.
The filly was bred in West Virginia by Maurice Casey III out of the Touch Gold mare Inca Girl. She was purchased for $70,000 by Brooke Hubbard, agent, from the Select Sales consignment to the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Select previously consigned That Kenney Kid as a short yearling at the Ocala Breeders' Sales Winter Mixed Sale, where SBM Training & Sales paid $15,000 for her.
A WinStar Farm homebred by Speightstown , Speightster debuted at 3 and won his first three outings for trainer Bill Mott, topped by the Dwyer Stakes (G3) at Belmont Park. He made only one more start and finished eighth in the Churchill Downs Stakes (G2) in his 4-year-old debut. He joined WinStar's stud roster in Kentucky in 2017 and has stood for $10,000 since.
Speightster is out of the Danzig mare Dance Swiftly, who is a full sister to Candian Horse of the Year and U.S. champion Dance Smartly, a half sister to Canadian champion and grade 1 winner Dancethruthedawn, and a half sister to twice leading sire Smart Strike.
