Topped by a colt from the first crop of Danzing Candy  purchased by agent Donato Lanni for $115,000, the Ocala Breeders' Sales October Sale's open yearling session Oct. 14 concluded the two-day auction in Ocala, Fla.

Wednesday's session topper (Hip 632) was consigned by Lisa McGreevy's Abbie Road Farm and was bred in Kentucky by Dan Leach and Valencia Leach. Produced from the winning Street Boss  mare Bosserette, the colt is from the direct female family of graded stakes winners Regal Thunder and Lindon Lime. Danzing Candy stands at Rancho San Miguel in San Miguel, Calif., where his 2020 fee was $5,000.

McGreevy said the colt was specifically placed in the open session rather than the previous day's selected yearling group because it was felt he would be a standout.

"He was an outstanding individual," said McGreevy, who offered the yearling on behalf of friends she declined to name who had purchased the colt privately. "He was at the top of the heap today. We decided to move him into this spot (rather than the selected session). We thought he would stand out on this day. If you bring a good horse here or at any sale, you're going to be OK. They pick the best horses and they buy them. The guys who own him worked so hard, and they deserve it. I am delighted for them."

From 650 head cataloged for the two-day auction that also included 2-year-olds and horses of racing age, OBS sold 381 horses for an aggregate $7,361,400, an average price of $19,321, and a $10,000 median. With 119 horses not sold from 500 offered, the RNA rate was 23.8%.

During the 2019 sale that consisted only of yearlings, 397 horses fetched $9,045,600, averaging $22,785 with a $13,000 median.

Wednesday's finale saw 260 yearlings sold for a total of $2,887,400, compared with 267 grossing $3,356,400 a year ago. The average price was $11,105 compared with $12,571 in 2019, and the median price was $7,750 compared with $8,000 a year ago. The RNA rate was 20.7% compared with 23.3% a year ago.

Abbie Road also consigned the overall sale topper, a Not This Time  yearling filly (Hip 149) purchased by agent Tonja Terranova for $225,000 during the Oct. 13 Selected Sale of Yearlings.

The top price for a 2-year-old was the $155,000 winning bid from Zedan Racing Stables for a son of Empire Maker  consigned by Top Line Sales, agent, as Hip 39 during Tuesday's session.
