Stonestreet Stables' Campanelle puts her undefeated record on the line and looks to fire fresh off the layoff in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T) Nov. 6 at Keeneland.
The Wesley Ward-trained daughter of Kodiac found international success when she soared to the top of her class with victories in the Aug. 23 Darley Prix Morny—Finale des Darley Series (G1) at Deauville and June 20 Queen Mary Stakes (G2) at Ascot Racecourse after breaking her maiden at first asking May 31 at Gulfstream Park.
According to Ward, the filly maintains a mild-mannered disposition regardless of the challenges that come her way.
"Campanelle's really laid back, an easy going filly," Ward said. "Nothing bothers her. It's amazing she's so fast because she's got a really, really great mind, a really relaxed type of horse."
Working steadily over the Keeneland lawn in preparation for the Breeders' Cup, Campanelle tuned up through an easy five furlongs Oct. 31 in 1:08.
Ward also sends out Royal Approval for Three Chimneys Farm. The homebred daughter of Tiznow won the Oct. 11 Matron Stakes (G3T) at Belmont Park after breaking her maiden Sept. 9 at Kentucky Downs. She was ambitiously placed in the Queen Mary after running second to Campanelle at Gulfstream, but finished 17th in that Ascot start, although she has gotten back on track since her return to the U.S. Union Gables, runner-up in the Matron for Todd Pletcher, GMP Stables, and F Bellavia, will face her again Friday.
Aunt Pearl, the 3-1 favorite on the morning line, is another swift contender in a loaded field. The Lope de Vega filly trained by Brad Cox shattered a Keeneland stakes record which had stood since 1999 when she won the Oct. 7 JPMorgan Chase Jessamine Stakes (G2T) at 1 1/16 miles in 1:40.86 in just her second start. The win followed a five-length wiring at a mile over good going upon her debut for Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, Peter Deutsch, Michael Kisber, The Elkstone Group, and Bethlehem Stables Sept. 1 at Churchill Downs. Aunt Pearl worked four furlongs in :48 3/5 Oct. 30 on the main track at Churchill in preparation for her Breeders' Cup start.
"She was amazing; solid move. I feel like we're in a really good spot (with her)," Cox said.
Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, and Bethlehem Stables' Miss Grillo Stakes (G2T) winner Plum Ali puts an undefeated record on the line as she steps up to top-level company for Christophe Clement for the first time in her fourth start; Graham Motion sends in Wertheimer and Frere's homebred Catch a Glimpse Stakes winner Alda off a runner-up finish in the Sept. 20 Natalma Stakes (G1T) at Woodbine; Kaleem Shah's Madone looks to go 4-for-4 off a victory in the Oct. 4 Surfer Girl Stakes at Santa Anita Park for Simon Callaghan; Richard Baltas trainee Tetragonal comes in off a second in that race for Slam Dunk Racing and Joey Platts; Peter Brant and Chad Brown aim high with maiden winner Editor at Large off a third in the Oct. 4 Miss Grillo at Belmont; and Mark Casse will saddle Sharp Susan Stakes winner Spanish Loveaffair, runner-up in the Jessamine in her last start, for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Michael Hernon, and Gary Barber.
The European contingent is made up of group 2 winner Miss Amulet for Doreen Tabor and trainer Ken Condon; group 3 winner Mother Earth, trained by Aidan O'Brien for Coolmore partners; group 2-placed Nazuna, trained by Roger Varian for his wife Hanako Varian; and the group 1-placed Jessica Harrington trainee Oodnadatta, campaigned by Robert Scarborough and Susan Magnier.
