Barkley wins the 2018 Longacres Mile Handicap at Emerald Downs

Longacres Mile Handicap (G3) winner Barkley has been retired and will enter stud next year at El Dorado Farms, the Enumclaw, Wash., farm announced Nov. 11.

The 7-year-old son of Munnings  was bred in Kentucky by Candy Meadows out of the Medaglia d'Oro  daughter Numero d'Oro, a half sister to stakes-placed, stakes producer Ice Lady (Cat Thief). Barkley's second dam is multiple grade 2-placed stakes winner Numero Uno, who is also the dam of winner Fallseed (by Forest Wildcat), who is the dam of multiple grade 1-placed, grade 2 winner Ivy Bell and stakes-placed winner Mannford. The family has also produced Silver Cloud, who was a champion 2-year-old filly in France.

Vicki Potter bought Barkley for $21,000 at the 2014 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Under the ownership of trainer Howard Belvoir and Rising Star Stable, Barkley won both his starts at 2. He went on to win three consecutive black-type stakes at 3, taking the Auburn Handicap, Coca-Cola Stakes, and Seattle Slew Stakes at Emerald Downs. He was runner-up in the Emerald Downs Derby.

Throughout his six-year racing career, he won or placed in 10 black-type stakes, all at Emerald Downs, and captured the Longacres Mile in 2018. He raced twice there in 2020, running seventh in the Mt. Rainer Stakes in his final start Aug. 13.

Barkley retires with a 10-5-1 record from 20 starts and earned $368,425. He will stand at El Dorado for $2,000.
