River Boyne, who won seven stakes in the U.S. including this year's Frank E. Kilroe Mile Stakes (G1T) after imported from Europe, has returned to his native Ireland for stud duty. The 5-year-old son of Dandy Man has joined Tara Stud's stallion roster for 2021.
The bay runner, who started three times for trainer Gordon Elliott at 2 before switching to Jeff Mullins after selling at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale in 2017, made over $1.2 million in winning nine of 25 starts. He rose to stakes prominence as a 3-year-old and was in the midst of a banner season this year before retired from racing in June due to a sesamoid injury.
His top-level score in the Mar. 7 Kilroe at Santa Anita Park came by defeating crack female miler Got Stormy. Over his career, he also scored three times in grade 2 and 3 company for owners Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal.
Gantz: River Boyne Retired With Sesamoid Injury
River Boyne, bought for 70,000 guineas (US$97,358) by Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal at Tattersalls from the consignment of Cullentra House Stables, Ireland, is the seventh foal out of the Mark Of Esteem mare Clytha, a half sister to high-class miler Ventiquattrofogli—and a half brother to three winners.
Derek Iceton, Tara Stud manager, said: "River Boyne has arrived safely and we'll be announcing details of his syndication and nomination fee shortly.
"I'm thrilled to have secured him after closely following his career since his impressive victory at two. He has all the qualities that you would wish to see in a stallion: ultra sound, impressive physique, and a great attitude."
River Boyne is one of three top-level winners for his 17-year-old sire, who currently resides at Ballyhane Stud in County Carlow, and is notably the first son of Dandy Man to retire to stud in Europe.
His stud fee is to be announced.
