Jilli Marie wins the South Ocean Stakes at Woodbine

Jilli Marie became the first black-type winner for Dynamic Sky when the 2-year-old filly found a seam and galloped away to a 1 1/2-length victory in the CA$100,400 (US$76,452) South Ocean Stakes at Woodbine.

Making her second start in a field of nine Ontario-bred 2-year-old fillies going 6 1/2 furlongs on the all-weather track, Jilli Marie broke awkwardly from post 2 and was last of all. Silent Guroo led the way through a :22.54 quarter and a :45.59 half with Meet the Soprano in pursuit, while Jilli Marie ranged up to third as jockey Steve Bahen found a rail trip into contention. As the field turned for home, Jilli Marie squeezed between the pacesetters and quickly assumed a clear advantage, holding safe until the end.

The final time was 1:16.57.

Bred by Brian Wright out of the Cape Canaveral mare Jilli's Cape, Jilli Marie was an $11,274 purchase by owner Kevin Drew from Shannondoe Farm's consignment to the CTHS Ontario Division's 2019 Canadian-Bred Yearling Sale. She is 2-for-2 for trainer Katerina Vassilieva with $74,677 in earnings.

Dynamic Sky, a 10-year-old son of Sky Mesa, was grade 1-placed on both dirt and turf for trainer Mark Casse. He took the Pasco Stakes on the main track and the Red Smith Handicap (G3T) on the lawn and was retired with a 5-6-7 record from 34 starts, with earnings of $1,099,258. He stood at Shannondoe from 2017-18 before moving to WorkWize Stables in Alberta for 2020, where his advertised fee was CA$3,000.
