Orglandes surges outside Going to Vegas to win the Red Carpet Handicap at Del Mar

New York invader Orglandes didn't have a clear path until late in the $102,500 Red Carpet Handicap (G3T) Nov. 26 at Del Mar, but a short window in the stretch was all she needed. She accelerated past rivals, going from sixth to first in the final furlong to notch a half-length victory.

The winner, a 4-year-old daughter of Le Harve owned by Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables, and Wonder Stables, survived a stewards' inquiry after bumping fifth-place Blame Debbie with a sixteenth of a mile remaining. Returning $4.20 to win as the favorite, the Chad Brown trainee raced 1 3/8 miles on firm turf in 2:15.85 under Irad Ortiz Jr. The Red Carpet was her initial stakes victory.

Fractions in the race were :49.06, 1:14.71, and  1:40.08, set by Aunt Lubie, who weakened to sixth.

Finishing second was Going to Vegas, followed by Quick in third. The latter was bumped by Blame Debbie after the contact from Orgalndes.

Stewards determined the incident was unlikely to have caused a rival a better placing, according to the Equibase chart.

"I wasn't really worried. There was a little bump but nothing serious," said Jose Hernandez, Brown's assistant. "Chad talked to the jockey in the morning. He said just to break and play off of it. It's a mile and three-eighth, a long race, so the jockey can do what he feels. The pace was good and he was in a really good position and then made a strong finish."

Orglandes took home first-place purse money of $60,000, which pushed her career earnings to $154,772. She raced in her native France at ages 2 and 3 before acquired by her current connections for racing in America this year. She ran third in her U.S. bow at Monmouth Park going 1 1/16 miles before achieving allowance success at 1 1/8 miles at Belmont Park in early October. She is now 4-for-10.

"We thought this would be a better distance for her," Ortiz said. The last time it was too short for her. She got 'racy' on me. But this distance is much better for her. She did well with it."

She was originally bought for €75,000 ($US 88,245) by Sylvain Vidal from the Coulonces Sales consignment at the Arqana October Yearling Sale in 2017. Bred in France by S. A. Franklin Finance and Elisabeth Vidal, she is the first stakes winner for her dam, the Dansili mare Influence.

The Red Carpet gave Brown his ninth stakes victory at Del Mar, according to track publicity. The East Coast-based trainer annually sends shippers to pursue the track's major stakes on grass during the late portion of its fall meet.
