Sequel Stallions New York announced Nov. 30 lower stud fees for the established sires on its 2021 roster, with three stallions' fees cut in half.
"It is a very tough climate in the sales market anywhere now, but especially in the regional markets," said Becky Thomas with Sequel Stallions. "We want to give our breeders a chance to be profitable. The recent sales in Kentucky have clearly demonstrated breeding in Kentucky does not guarantee a profit. The lower stallion fees, no transportation or boarding costs coupled with the lucrative purse structure NYRA offers and resulting awards, will give our breeders the opportunity to recover from the dismal 2020 season."
Leading Sequel's roster for next year will be new sire Honest Mischief , a 4-year-old son of leading North American sire Into Mischief . The graded-placed stakes winner will be backed by a syndicate led by Sequel and the stallion's owner/breeder Juddmonte Farms. Honest Mischief will stand for $6,500 with a live foal stands and nurses guarantee.
New York's multiple leading sire Freud will stand for $5,000, down from $6,500 this year. Among active New York sires, Freud is the leader by number of black type winners and black-type performers, number of graded stakes winners and grade 1 winners, and by average progeny earnings of $86,138. The full brother to the late prominent international sire Giant's Causeway has lifetime progeny earnings over $65.7 million worldwide.
Mission Impazible , a 13-year-old son of Unbridled's Song and multiple graded stakes-winning millionaire, is one of three stallions to have their fees reduced to $2,500 along with Union Jackson and Destin . Mission Impazible has regularly led his sire class in New York for the first-crop through third-crop racing seasons. He's sired seven black-type winners and has career progeny earnings exceeding $9.2 million.
Multiple stakes winner Union Jackson, the first son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin to stand in New York, will have his first 2-year-olds in 2021. He is out of grade 1 winner Hot Dixie Chick, who is a half sister to Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Always Dreaming .
Track record setter and multiple graded stakes winner Destin is a full brother to grade 1 winner and sire Creative Cause . Destin won the 2016 Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (G2) in record time, going 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.82. He later was second by a nose in the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1). Destin's first foals arrived earlier this year.
Multiple mare discounts are available as well as incentives for repeat breeders. Due to covid restrictions, the farm announced it is unlikely to conduct a stallion showcase this year. Virtual inspections for all the stallions will be available in the near future.
