Calumet Farm's True Timber, perched just off two dueling leaders, pounced on the turn and drew off in the stretch for an emphatic victory in the $250,000 Cigar Mile Handicap (G1) Dec. 5 at Aqueduct Racetrack.
The Jack Sisterson trainee raced a mile on a sloppy track in 1:36.49 under Kendrick Carmouche. The 6-year-old son of Mineshaft bred in Kentucky by Mr. and Mrs. Marc Ferrell paid $16.60 for a $2 win wager.
Snapper Sinclair rallied from midpack to finish second, just ahead of third-place Performer, the favorite, who broke a step slow and trailed in the early going. Three-year-old King Guillermo, who contested the early pace with Mr. Buff, was fourth.
Mind Control, a 20-1 outsider on the morning line, and Firenze Fire, the 5-2 second choice on the line, were scratched from the race in the slop.
