Bodexpress wins the Clark Stakes at Churchill Downs

Bodexpress, winner of the Nov. 27 Clark Stakes Presented by Norton Healthcare (G1) has been retired, according to trainer and co-owner Gustavo Delgado. The 4-year-old son of Bodemeister  won four of 17 starts and earned $694,600.

"With great regret, we announce the retirement of Bodexpress," Delgado said via Twitter. "He suffered a career-ending injury while winning the grade 1 Clark. A very talented colt, who finally showed his potential at Churchill Downs. Thank you Bode for the journey and memories. To his fans, thank you for your support!!!"

Bred in Kentucky by Martha Jane Mulholland, Bodexpress is out of the City Zip mare Pied a Terre. A two-time buy-back in the sale ring at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and the following year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, he raced for Lucas Noriega's Top Racing, Rafael Celis' Global Thoroughbred, and Delgado's GDS Racing Stable.

Second in last year's Xpressbet Florida Derby (G1) behind Maximum Security , Bodexpress entered the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) while still a maiden. He finished 14th and was placed 13th. He entered the gate for the Preakness Stakes (G1) but dumped rider John Velazquez at the break.

Given some time, he returned to break his maiden last October at Gulfstream Park West, and added an allowance score before returning to stakes company. Bodexpress entered the Clark off an allowance optional claiming score by 11 1/4 lengths Oct. 17 at Gulfstream Park West.

On the pace, he jumped to the lead in the stretch of the Clark, winning the nine-furlong test by a length over Code of Honor in 1:49.12.

Fifth in last year's Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes Presented by Runhappy (G1), Bodexpress had been pointed toward a start in the $3 million race early next year.

Delgado also tweeted that Bodexpress was on a farm near Ocala, Fla., and stallion plans were being finalized.
