Newspaperofrecord wins the Just a Game Stakes at Belmont Park

Klaravich Stables' Newspaperofrecord, the winner of the 2018 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T), has been retired and sold privately, trainer Chad Brown announced on Twitter Dec. 9.

Brilliant at 2, the daughter of Lope de Vega won all three of her starts in 2018 by 6 1/2 lengths or more. Besides her Breeders' Cup score, she won a maiden race at Saratoga Race Course in August 2018 and the Miss Grillo Stakes (G2T) at Belmont Park that September.

A 3-year-old campaign resulted in three losses from as many starts, though she was second in the Edgewood Stakes Presented by Forcht Bank (G3T) at Churchill Downs and the Wonder Again Stakes (G3T) at Belmont.

She rebounded this year at 4, winning the Intercontinental Stakes (G3T) and Just a Game Stakes (G1T) at Belmont. She wrapped up her career with a second in the Sept. 5 Longines Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes (G2T) at Churchill and a third in the Oct. 3 First Lady Stakes Presented by UK Healthcare (G1T) at Keeneland.

She continued to train while under consideration for last month's Matriarch Stakes (G1T) at Del Mar, but Brown elected not to run her.

She will be bred next year to Galileo, according to Brown, who did not specify the filly's new owner on social media. One of the world's top sires, Galileo stands at Coolmore Stud in Ireland.

Newspaperofrecord was bred in Ireland by Times of Wigan. A daughter of the group 3-winning Holy Roman Emperor mare Sunday Times, she is a half sister to stakes-winning Classical Times. She was bought overseas by Seth Klarman's Klaravich Stables for 200,000 guineas (US$278,019) from the Goldford Stud consignment at the 2017 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

She was retired with a 5-3-1 record from 10 starts with earnings of more than $1.1 million.
