Israel Flores Horses' homebred Special Mischief became the first winner for Koh I Noor when she broke her maiden at first asking Dec. 15 at Delta Downs.
A registered Louisiana-bred, Special Mischief broke just a hair short of first in the five-furlong dirt sprint and dueled on the inside with Accustomed to Hope for the early lead.
Ridden by Gerard Melancon, Special Mischief edged past her rival to set fractions of :22.94 and :47.55 through three-eighths of a mile. The filly managed to keep her head in front of Accustomed to Hope all the way to the top of the stretch before being set down for a drive.
In the final yards, Special Mischief inched away from the rest of the field and crossed the wire 2 1/4 lengths clear. Final time for the race was 1:00.93 over a track rated fast.
Special Mischief is the first foal out of the My Friend Max mare Madam Maggie. Trained by Andrea Ancil Ali, the filly earned $21,000 for her debut victory.
A half brother to grade 1-winning sprinter The Big Beast , stakes-placed Koh I Noor (by Harlan's Holiday—V V S Flawless, by Deputy Minister) amassed a 4-1-3 record from 18 starts and earnings of $141,778. Bred in Maryland by Green Willow Farms, he was trained by Dove Houghton and campaigned by Hot Silks Racing Stable and Carolyn Green. Koh I Noor's best performance came at 4 when he ran third in the Joseph French Memorial Stakes at Delaware Park.
Koh I Noor retired to stud in 2016 at the Louisiana Center for Equine Reproduction at Copper Crowne. He stood at Gulf Coast Equine in Louisiana in 2020 for a fee of $2,000.
