After finishing third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Presented by Coolmore America (G1T) Nov. 6 at Keeneland, Outadore is entered to try dirt for the first time in the $200,000 Remington Springboard Mile Stakes Dec. 18 at Remington Park.
Breeze Easy's Outadore has put together a nice trio of races, all on turf, to start his career while gradually stretching out in distance. He posted a 2 3/4-length win in his maiden special weight debut at 5 1/2 furlongs July 26 at Saratoga Race Course before posting a clear victory in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Turf Sprint Stakes Sept. 12.
In the one-mile Breeders' Cup Juvenile, Outadore led into the stretch before yielding to winner Fire At Will and runner-up Battleground. Since that effort Outadore has been working regularly on the dirt at Keeneland for trainer Wesley Ward, including a five-furlong move in :59 3/5 Dec. 11—earning the bullet.
Outadore is a son of Outwork , who raced exclusively on dirt and registered a victory in the 2016 Wood Memorial Stakes (G1); and he's a half brother to Piedi Bianchi, who placed in three grade 1 races on dirt.
The two-turn mile test under the lights Friday night at Remington has attracted 11 2-year-olds vying for the purse as well as qualifying points toward next year's Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) at Churchill Downs. The Road to the Kentucky Derby race awards points to the top four finishers (10-4-2-1) used to determine the Derby field if more than 20 horses are entered.
Another major contender also enters off a trio of turf races in Cowan, although the son of Kantharos did make his first two career starts on dirt, winning a maiden special weight race on debut May 22 at Churchill.
Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, Madaket Stables, and Spendthrift Farm's Cowan is trained by Steve Asmussen, who will try for a third straight victory in the Springboard Mile after sending out Shoplifted to a win last year and Long Range Toddy in 2018. Asmussen has won the race six times dating back to when it was the Remington MEC Mile Stakes.
Cowan has placed in three stakes races on turf, most recently rallying to finish second to the well-regarded Golden Pal in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2T) Nov. 6 at Keeneland. Cowan will try two turns for the first time in the Springboard Mile.
Asmussen also has entered L and N Racing and Clark Brewster's Saffa's Day, a son of Carpe Diem who won his maiden debut Oct. 11 at Keeneland before fading to sixth in the Nyquist Stakes Nov. 6 on the Breeders' Cup undercard.
The most accomplished local horse entered is undefeated Number One Dude, an Oklahoma-bred campaigned by his breeder Terry Westemeir. The son of American Lion has rolled to three straight victories by a combined 14 1/2 lengths, including back-to-back stakes wins at Remington in races restricted to state-breds in his past two starts.
