Tapizar Dies Following Stall Accident

Tapizar , a 12-year-old son of Tapit who was set to be shipped to Japan to stand stud at Yushun Stallion Station for the 2021 season, was euthanized after an accident in his stall at the Gainesway quarantine barn the night of Dec. 15. The grade 1 winner was scheduled to travel in mid-January.
"It is with great sadness that Gainesway confirms the sudden and tragic loss of Tapizar," Gainesway said in a statement. "Our hearts go out to all of those involved."
Tapizar is the sire of Monomoy Girl, a seven-time grade 1 winner and 2018 champion 3-year-old filly whom Spendthrift Farm bought for $9.5 million at The November Sale, Fasig-Tipton's premier breeding stock sale in Lexington. Monomoy Girl will continue racing in 2021.
The third-leading sire by cumulative earnings from his sire class, Tapizar is also third on this year's fifth-crop sires list. He is also the sire of Delaware Oaks (G3) winner Project Whiskey, four other graded stakes winners, and 24 black-type performers, which include 10 black-type winners. His progeny have collectively earned more than $22.5 million.
Tapizar won the 2012 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) and San Fernando Stakes (G2) on his way to earning $972,632. He stood his entire stud career at Gainesway since he was retired from racing in 2013.
