Senor Buscador From Last to First in Springboard Mile

Senor Buscador wins the Remington Springboard Mile Stakes at Remington Park
Last of 10 after a half-mile and over 11 lengths off the early pace, Senor Buscador rallied furiously down the stretch under jockey Luis Quinonez to win the $200,000 Remington Springboard Mile Stakes by 5 3/4 lengths Dec. 18 at Remington Park.
The victory earned him 10 qualifying points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, and the race further awarded points on a 4-2-1 scale to the second- through fourth-place finishers.
The Remington Springboard Mile was a one-horse affair over the final furlong, with Senor Buscador leaving Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2T) runner-up Cowan distanced in second. Red N Wild was third and Saffa's Day was fourth.
The 7-5 favorite, Outadore, ran fifth in his first start on dirt and after previously finishing third in the Breeder's Cup Juvenile Turf Presented by Coolmore America (G1T) at Keeneland.
The winner, trained by Todd Fincher and owned by Joe Peacock Jr., raced a mile on a fast track in 1:37.87. He paid $9.80 as the third choice.
"He broke bad, but that was good because he settled down on the backstretch," said Quinonez. "On the turn for home, I thought, 'Oh my God, what a horse I have.' It feels like he can go farther."
A 2-year-old colt by Mineshaft , Senor Buscador is out of the Desert God mare Rose's Desert, a multiple stakes-winning New Mexico-based runner who went 10-for-15 over her career, winning $626,035. He is his dam's third stakes winner from four foals following Runaway Ghost and Sheriff Brown. Runaway Ghost won the Sunland Derby (G3) in 2018.
"We'll see how (Senor Buscador) comes back (Saturday) and then take him to Houston and possibly on to the Fair Grounds for their stakes schedule," said Fincher. "We do what's best for the horse. That's my responsibility. So we'll see."
Senor Buscador improved his record to 2-for-2 following a 2 1/2-length debut victory Nov. 6 when racing greenly.
"The first time he won, he really didn't know what he was doing or what was going on," said Fincher. "He was really ornery in the post parade. But he was impressive in that race even though he sure doesn't like breaking from the gate."
The colt earned $120,000 Friday for Peacock of San Antonio, Tx., and overall has earned $137,247. Peacock bred him with his late father, Joe Peacock Sr.
Senor Buscador was the second Springboard win for Quinonez who won aboard Louies Flower in 2013. He provided the first victory in the race for the rest of his connections.
Other winners on the Friday night card at Remington included Jeweled Princess in the She's All In Stakes, Dont Tell Noobody in the Jim Thorpe Stakes, Dipping In in the Useeit Stakes, Oliviaofthedesert in the Trapeze Stakes, and Hunka Burning Love in the Jeffrey A. Hawk Memorial Stakes.
