Champion Monomoy Girl returned to the work tab Dec. 27 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots where she breezed three furlongs solo in :37 flat. The work was the first back for the 5-year-old Tapizar mare since winning her second Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) Nov. 7 at Keeneland.
"It was just something to get her started, an easy three-eighths by herself," said trainer Brad Cox, who has conditioned the filly through all of her 15 career starts. "We will start picking up the pace each week moving forward. We will probably do a half (mile) next week and prepare for the (Feb. 15) Bayakoa Stakes (G3)—it's a race on Monday. That's our short term goal as of right now. That's what we're targeting with her."
A winner of more than $4.4 million in purses, Monomoy Girl raced for the majority of her career on behalf of the partnership of Monomoy Stables, Michael Dubb, The Elkstone Group, and Bethlehem Stables. Out of the Henny Hughes mare Drumette, the mare has never been worse than second, only missing the winner's circle twice (one of those times due to disqualification for interference). To date, Monomoy Girl has earned seven grade 1 wins.
Offered to The November Sale, Fasig-Tipton's premier breeding stock sale, Monomoy Girl was purchased by Spendthrift Farm for $9.5 million from the consignment of ELiTE Sales. Spendthrift later announced that the champion chestnut—who had missed the entirety of her 4-year-old season to injury and illness—would return to training in 2021 with Cox instead of directly joining the farm's elite broodmare band.
