Jockey McMahon Charged With Attempted Murder

Jockey Charles Jantzen "C.J." McMahon was arrested Jan. 2 by the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office in Louisiana. He was charged with attempted murder of the second degree, illegal use of weapons, and possession of marijuana.

Bond for the 26-year-old rider was set at $80,000. He has a scheduled court date of Jan. 5.

McMahon last rode Dec. 28 at Delta Downs, where he competed in three races. He was entered to ride in nine races Jan. 8 at Sam Houston Race Park and eight races Jan. 9 at the same track.

In 2020, McMahon's mounts collected over $1.1 million and he won 47 times from 291 races. His highest-earning year came in 2016 when his mounts made nearly $5 million and he won 216 of 916 races. That year he won aboard Texas Chrome in the Oklahoma Derby (G3) at Remington Park, and Great Minds in the Texas Mile Stakes (G3) at Lone Star Park and Super Derby (G3) at Louisiana Downs.

McMahon began professionally race riding at age 16 in 2011 and has ridden regularly in his native Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Indiana, Kentucky, and Florida. Overall he has won 1,046 races from 6,734 starts. His career earnings stand at $22,682,202.

In 2017, McMahon was suspended 30 days by the Indiana Horse Racing Commission after testing positive for methamphetamine and THC.
