Jockey Charles Jantzen "C.J." McMahon, who was arrested Jan. 2 by the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office in Louisiana, was released on an $80,000 bond Jan. 3 and is scheduled to appear in District Court Jan. 5. The 26-year-old rider has been charged with attempted murder of the second degree, illegal use of weapons, and possession of marijuana.
In a story first reported by the Paulick Report, McMahon was pulled over during a traffic stop at around 4:30 p.m. CT Jan. 2. According to a public information officer for the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office, drugs were found and arresting officers discovered two outstanding warrants against him for attempted second degree murder and illegal use of weapons that were issued Dec. 27, 2020.
A spokesperson for the Lafayette city police said the matter has been turned over to the department's narcotics division and that case reports are sealed.
McMahon last rode Dec. 28 at Delta Downs, where he competed in three races. He was entered to ride in nine races Jan. 8 at Sam Houston Race Park and eight races Jan. 9 at the same track.
McMahon began professionally race riding at age 16 in 2011 and has ridden regularly in his native Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Indiana, Kentucky, and Florida. Overall he has won 1,046 races from 6,734 starts. His career earnings stand at $22,682,202.
In 2017, McMahon was suspended 30 days by the Indiana Horse Racing Commission after testing positive for methamphetamine and THC.
