Arrigo, a group 2-winning son of Shirocco and a half brother to BMW Deutsches Derby (G1) winner and group 1 sire Adlerflug, has been confirmed as having joined the stallion ranks at Yorton Farm Stud in Wales.

The 13-year-old, who is owned by Qatari Abdul Malik, previously stood at Gestut Graditz in Germany and then moved to Haras du Mazet in central France in October 2018.

Originally trained by Jens Hirschberger, Arrigo won the Oppenheim-Union-Rennen (G2) and was also second in the Gran Premio Jockey Club Italiano (G2) for owner-breeder Gestut Schlenderhan.

Having been sold to Qatari owners at the end of his 3-year-old campaign, Arrigo finished third in the Qatar Derby (G1) and HH The Heir Apparent Emir Trophy (G1) for Ibrahim Al Malki.

Yorton Farm Stud's David Futter said: "It's taken us two years to secure Arrigo, but thankfully we have him now. It's common for sons of successful flat stallions to retire to stud, but it's difficult to acquire sons of quality jump sires.

"Stallions bred in Germany have always been very lucky for Yorton and our supporters, and this one comes from one of that country's best female families. Standing 16.2 hands, Arrigo is a wonderful-looking horse, he raced at the highest level and had the soundness and temperament to remain in training as a 7-year-old.

"He's been bought in partnership with the Potter family and will have the backing of our broodmare bands. Yorton's policy is to support the stallions we stand, and it is our intention to buy his stock at the sales and also put them in to training."

Shirocco has sired top-level winners on the flat and over jumps—including Brown Panther, Windstoss, and Annie Power most notably—while his son is a half brother to Adlerflug, a dual group 1 winner, and the sire of this year's Deutsches Derby scorer and Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) runner-up In Swoop

Adlerflug—who is also responsible for group 1 winners Iquitos, Ito, Lacazar, and Torquator Tasso—hails from the family of Arc winner and phenomenal broodmare Urban Sea, the dam of Galileo and Sea The Stars, plus King's Best, a classic-winning racehorse and sire.
