Calumet Farm, WinStar Farm Leading Breeders in 2020

Calumet Farm topped the individual breeders' list in North America for the second year in a row with $9,768,957 in earnings in 2020, according to statistics released by The Jockey Club Information Systems. Calumet Farm bred 479 starters with 336 wins, 289 seconds, and 346 thirds from 2,587 starts.

WinStar Farm was second with earnings of $9,234,344 with 149 wins out of 1,137 starts. WinStar Farm topped the breeders' list that includes partners with $11,713,732 in earnings and 254 wins from 1,851 starts. Calumet Farm came in second on that list with $9,869,125 in earnings and 343 wins from 2,619 starts.

Historic Calumet Farm is owned by Brad Kelley, who made a fortune in the discount cigarette industry and who now owns NC2 Media, a successful publisher of guide books, travel magazines, and digital content. Among the largest landowners in America, Kelley formerly owned Kentucky Downs, located in Franklin, Ky., near the Tennessee stateline.

WinStar Farm, which won an Eclipse Award in 2016 as North America's outstanding breeder, is owned by Kenny Trout. The farm regularly ranks among North America's leading breeders and topped the standings in 2018 with $8.6 million in earnings. 

Rounding out the top 10 individual breeders were Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds, $8,628,034 (51 wins/380 starts); Godolphin, $7,032,428 (113/620); Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, $5,911,505 (138/744); Ken and Sarah Ramsey, $5,589,796 (206/1,633); Brereton C. Jones, $4,933,211 (159/1,087); Gary & Mary West Stables, $4,241,666 (126/762); Juddmonte Farms, $4,034,079 (64/377); and Woodford Thoroughbreds, $3,601,327 (115/834).

Completing the list of the top 10 breeders including partnerships were Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds, $8,628,034 (51 wins/380 starts); Godolphin, $8,240,296 (152/843); Ken Ramsey, $6,074,311 (220/1,705); Sarah Ramsey, $6,054,921 (219/1,700); Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, $5,966,876 (139/762); Brereton C. Jones, $5,594,645 (181/1,220); Fred Hertrich III, $4,773,048 (134/947); and Gary & Mary West Stables, $4,251,747 (127/774).
