This column highlights the performances of maidens who have made no more than five starts and who either sold for more than $500,000 at public auction, have siblings that are grade/group winners, or have dams that are grade/group winners. BloodHorse research shows maiden winners in particular who meet these criteria are more likely to go on to be graded stakes winners.
Gulfstream
Shadwell Stable's Lamutanaatty made a successful debut Jan. 9, when he was ridden to victory by Tyler Gaffalione at Gulfstream Park for trainer Chad Brown. The Into Mischief colt was purchased by Shadwell for $700,000 at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale where he was consigned by Stonehaven Steadings.
After brushing the gate in Saturday's six-furlong maiden test for newly turned 3-year-olds, Lamutanaatty raced in second through the first quarter-mile that went in :23.08. He passed the leader well within himself to take over and set fractions of :46.59 and :59.03 through five furlongs. Sainthood moved into second on the turn and closed to come within a head of the winner at the wire.
Lamutanaatty finished the distance in 1:11.92 on a fast track.
Bred by Haymarket Farm, Lamutanaatty is out of the Elusive Quality mare Gypsy Lou, a half sister to graded stakes winner and graded stakes producer First Passage, and out of a full sister to grade 1-placed sire Graeme Hall. Lamutanaatty's third dam Win Crafty Lady also produced grade 1 winner Harmony Lodge and graded stakes winner Win McCool.
Turfway
The day prior, Scales of Justice scored a win in his 3-year-old debut, taking a one-mile maiden special weight on the all-weather track at Turfway Park. The Uncle Mo colt, out of grade 1 winner Balance, made his debut Nov. 22 at Del Mar, but finished fifth.
Bred by Cloros Bloodstock, Scales of Justice is trained by Michael McCarthy for Andrew and William Warren Jr. Balance, by Thunder Gulch, is a half sister to Horse of the Year Zenyatta that won three grade 1 stakes in her racing career, including the Santa Anita Oaks (G1). From her six previous foals of racing age two others are winners.
Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Scales of Justice raced near the back of the field in Friday's test after bearing in at the start and causing a chain reaction of bumping, but he moved up to fourth after gathering himself. He then rallied to a half-length win in a final time of 1:39.09.
Tampa Bay
Robert Evans' Broadway also won his second start Jan. 8, taking a one-mile-and-40-yard maiden test for 3-year-olds at Tampa Bay Downs. The Quality Road colt was a $500,000 purchase at The Saratoga Sale, Fasig-Tipton's select yearling sale in New York, but went unsold on a final bid of $485,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales March 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale. He was retained by Evans and is now in the care of trainer Christophe Clement.
In his first start Dec. 12 at Gulfstream, Broadway got up to take fourth after being bumped. In Friday's test, Broadway was ridden by Samy Camacho, who placed the colt behind the pace through the first half-mile after the pair was bumped at the start. Broadway kept pace with leaders while three deep in the backstretch and was able to get a head in front as six furlongs went in 1:12.45.
After maintaining the lead, he pulled clear to win by 1 1/2 lengths in a final time of 1:40.44 on a fast track.
Bred by Peter E. Blum Thoroughbreds, Broadway is the first foal to race out of the Tapit mare Etiquette, who was bred and raced by Blum.
Others
Three other maidens of note found the winner's circle last week: Cypress Creek Equine's Respect for All, a gelded son of Uncle Mo and grade 1 winner Diplomat Lady, took a maiden claiming event at Aqueduct Racetrack in his debut and was claimed for $25,000 by owner Larry Roman; Murillo AAA Racing's Therestofthestory, a gelded half brother to graded stakes winner Sweet Whiskey, won his second start at Mahoning Valley Race Course; and LNJ Foxwoods' homebred Golden, a daughter of Tapit and group 3 winner Gold Round, scored in her second start at Santa Anita Park.
