Dual grade 1 stakes winner Bowies Hero was euthanized earlier this week after developing catastrophic foot complications, co-owner Sol Kumin said.
The 7-year-old Artie Schiller horse had been under veterinary care following a fifth-place finish in the San Gabriel Stakes (G2T) at Santa Anita Park Jan. 2. Kumin said he and the horse's other partners received text updates of an up-and-down recovery.
"He had been fighting and fighting," Kumin said.
Daily Racing Form first reported the horse's death from complications of laminitis.
A turf specialist, Bowie's Hero won eight of 28 races and nearly $1.6 million. He raced for Agave Racing Stable and other partners after he was acquired following a first-out maiden victory at Lone Star Park in 2016 and sent west to join trainer Phil D'Amato. He made his final seven starts for Agave Racing Stable, Kumin's Madaket Stables, ERJ Racing, and Rockin Robin Racing Stable.
His seven post-maiden victories came in stakes, highlighted by the 2019 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (G1T) at Keeneland and the 2018 Frank E. Kilroe Mile Stakes (G1T) at Santa Anita.
"He was just a really cool horse," said Kumin, who became a part-owner in early 2018.
Bred in Kentucky by Pope McLean, Pope McLean Jr., and Marc McLean, Bowies Hero is one of three winners for the Sky Mesa mare Remembered. He was a $32,000 purchase at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, where he was purchased by ELA Racing Stable from the Sweetbriar Sales consignment.
