Adena Springs Farm said Nov. 1 it has reached an agreement to buy 2012 Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) winner Fort Larned after he defends his title in this year's Classic Nov. 2 at Santa Anita Park.

Fort Larned, owned and bred by Janis Whitham in Kentucky, has won 10 of 24 starts heading into the Classic and has earned more than $4.1 million so far. The 5-year-old horse by E Dubai   out of the Broad Brush mare Arlucea also has won the Whitney Handicap and Stephen Foster Handicap (both gr. I).

Adena Springs owner Frank Stronach said he wants to stand the Ian Wilkes-trained Fort Larned, but a release gave no indication of a timetable.

"Adena Springs is very pleased to purchase Fort Larned, and we expect him to be part of our exceptional stallion roster," Stronach said. "He is a gifted racehorse, consistently displaying speed and stamina on dirt, and an outcross for Northern Dancer and Seattle Slew sire lines."

Whitham said Fort Larned is the "culmination of 30 years of breeding and racing" for her family. The horse's granddam, Bayakoa, won the Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) twice.

"We are excited about him standing at Adena Springs because we know he will have every chance to succeed, and we look forward to supporting him," Whitham said.

Whitham was represented by Doug Cauthen Thoroughbred Management in the transaction, the release said.
