Frost Giant Pensioned to ReRun in New York

New York stallion Frost Giant, an 18-year-old son of Giant's Causeway and sire of 17 stakes winners, has been pensioned and will spend his retirement at ReRun Thoroughbred Adoption near East Greenbush, south of Albany, according to ReRun program director Lisa Molloy.

Owned by Andrew Cohen, who raced the horse with IEAH Stable and Pegasus Holdings Group Stable, Frost Giant won the 2008 Suburban Handicap (G1) and two other group stakes overseas on his way to earning $454,630. He retired to stud in 2009 initially at Vinery New York and shuttled to Chile and Australia before settling down in New York at Keane Stud. Eventually Frost Giant was transferred to Irish Hill & Dutchess Views Stallions in 2018 and stood there until his recent retirement.

As a stallion, Frost Giant sired multiple graded stakes winner and millionaire Giant Expectations and multiple Australian group winner Valour Road. His runners appeared regularly in the winner's circle following New York Stallion Series races, including West Hills Giant, Frosty Margarita, Loki's Vengeance, Kid Is Frosty, and Frosty Bay, to name a few.

Cohen decided to retire the stallion because interest from breeders was cooling off, according to Molloy, but the owner/breeder is also leaving his options open to potentially breed to him privately in the future. Many intact males retired to ReRun are gelded because they are eventually retrained and adopted out for second careers, but Molloy said leaving Frost Giant a stallion should not be a problem.

"He is not aggressive or difficult to handle," said Molloy. "He is really a pretty cool old horse."

Molloy said she was more than happy to take Frost Giant because he has a following among racing fans, which will help attract visitors and eventual supporters to ReRun—a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization—and also, many of Frost Giant's progeny that ReRun has received over the years have gone on to became successful jumpers.

"They're really athletic," Molloy said. "We have horses we adopted out in Canada, in New Orleans, and in Virginia that are actively competing and doing quite well."

Frost Giant arrived at ReRun Jan. 28 and joins other high-profile New York racehorses such as stakes winner West Hills Giant, multiple stakes winner Saratoga Snacks, and more recently grade 2-placed winner Dowse's Beach.

"It really does help us out," Molloy said. "We've already had multiple people contact us about coming out and visiting Frost Giant. People flying into Albany and driving up from the city for the Saratoga meet frequently will text us that they want to come by."
