Capo Kane wins the Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack

A field topped by runaway Jerome Stakes winner Capo Kane is falling into place for the Feb. 6 Withers Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct Racetrack. The $250,000 race is the second of New York's stakes preps for 3-year-olds leading up to the May 1 Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) at Churchill Downs.

Bing Cherry Racing and Leonard Liberto's Capo Kane romped by 6 1/4 lengths over a muddy track in the Jan. 1 Jerome Stakes, a one-turn mile test that opened the series of four New York Racing Association preps. The California-bred son of Street Sense  will be asked to cover a two-turn, 1 1/8-mile distance Saturday.

The probable starters for the Withers also include Overtook, Risk Taking, allowance winner Royal Number, and Howard County Stakes victor Shackqueenking. Jerome third Hold the Salsa will skip the Withers and target the $100,000 Damon Runyon Stakes for New York-breds March 14.

Klaravich Stable's Risk Taking, a son of Medaglia d'Oro  trained by Chad Brown, posted a 2 1/4-length maiden win at 1 1/8 miles Dec. 13 at Aqueduct, his first start around two turns on dirt and racing with blinkers.

Repole Stable, St. Elias Stable, Michael Tabor, Mrs. John Magnier, and Derrick Smith's Overtook prevailed in a Dec. 20 one-mile maiden race at Aqueduct. The son of Curlin , purchased for $1 million from the Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency consignment at the 2019 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, is trained by Todd Pletcher, who also conditions possible Withers starter Donegal Bay.

The top four finishers will receive 10-4-2-1 Kentucky Derby qualifying points.
