This column highlights the performances of maidens who have made no more than five starts and who either sold for more than $500,000 at public auction, have siblings that are grade/group winners, or have dams that are grade/group winners. BloodHorse research shows maiden winners in particular who meet these criteria are more likely to go on to be graded stakes winners.
Aqueduct
In her third start for trainer Chad Brown, Peter Brant's Teetotaler found the winner's circle Jan. 30 at Aqueduct Racetrack. The Uncle Mo filly, a half sister to $2 million purchase Chestertown, won a one-mile maiden test for New York-bred 3-year-old fillies by 6 3/4 lengths.
Teetotaler finished eighth in her Nov. 7 debut at Aqueduct and placed second Dec. 20. On Saturday, Manny Franco placed her behind Know It All Red who took the field through the first quarter-mile in :24.79 and a half-mile in :49.87, but Teetotaler had a head in front as six furlongs went in 1:16.04. She then drew away to complete the distance in 1:41.79 on a fast track.
Bred by Chester and Mary Broman, Teetotaler is out of the couple's dual grade 1-winning mare Artemis Agrotera, who is out of a full sister to the late grade 1 winner and sire Stephen Got Even.
Her first foal, Chestertown, races for West Point Thoroughbreds, Siena Farm, and Robert Masiello, who purchased the colt from Sequel Bloodstock at the Ocala Breeders' Sales March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. Woodford Racing and the Bromans later joined the ownership group of the colt who has won four races including the Albany Stakes.
Teetotaler was bought by Brant's White Birch Farm for $500,000 from the Sequel New York consignment during The Saratoga Sale, Fasig-Tipton's select yearling sale in New York
Tampa Bay
On Sunday, another Brown trainee made her mark. Juddmonte Farms' homebred Golden Plume launched her career impressively when she defeated a field of six other 3-year-old fillies in a one-mile turf contest at Tampa Bay Downs in her debut.
The Candy Ride filly is out of the Juddmonte-bred French group 1 winner Nebraska Tornado.
Ridden by Antonio Gallardo, Golden Plume raced in third through a half-mile that went in :47.34, moved up to second as six furlongs went in 1:12.50, and then took over in the stretch to draw off by 5 3/4 lengths on the firm turf course. The final time for the mile was 1:37.04.
Fair Grounds
Trainer Al Stall sent out a winner Saturday, as He's in Charge rallied in the stretch to win a six-furlong maiden test for 3-year-olds by 3 1/4 lengths at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
A son of Candy Ride, He's in Charge is out of the grade 3-winning Indian Charlie mare Brazen Persuasion and is owned by Paul Braverman, Timothy Pinch, Parkland Thoroughbreds, and Newport Stables.
He's in Charge raced in fourth under Miguel Mena as the leader set fractions of :21.71 and :44.81 for the first half-mile. Third and a head behind heading into the stretch, He's in Charge closed quickly to complete the distance in 1:09.83 on the fast track.
Bred by Bridlewood Farm in Florida, He's in Charge was bought by Braverman from the Denali Stud consignment for $180,000 during the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.
