Grade 2 winners Get Smokin and Fancy Liquor head a field of 12 in the $175,000 Tampa Bay Stakes (G3T), a 1 1/16-mile turf test for 4-year-olds and up Feb. 6 at Tampa Bay Downs, and will attempt to find their way back to the winner's circle. They'll also have to face two improving horses in Greyes Creek and Atone, who are trying stakes for the first time off multiple wins.
Get Smokin, owned by the Mary Abeel Sullivan Revocable Trust and trained by Thomas Bush, was less than a length away from capturing a top-level victory in his last start. The now 4-year-old Get Stormy gelding set the pace in the Nov. 28 Hollywood Derby (G1T) at Del Mar racing 1 1/8 miles but was passed late to finish fourth. That race was an eighth of a mile longer than the Oct. 18 Hill Prince Stakes (G2T), which he dug in to win by a head at Belmont Park.
Skychai Racing and Sand Dollar Stable's Fancy Liquor made the grade in the Sept. 5 American Turf Stakes Presented by Smithfield (G2T) run at the Tampa Bay's distance at Churchill Downs. He rallied for a half-length score in that affair after fighting on the front end to win the Aug. 12 Caesars Stakes at Indiana Grand one start earlier. The 4-year-old Lookin At Lucky colt trained by Mike Maker was a close second in the Nov. 6 Bryan Station Stakes at Keeneland, but only managed fifth in the Dec. 26 Tropical Park Derby at Gulfstream Park.
OXO Equine's $850,000 2-year-old purchase Greyes Creek steps up off three straight wins—a maiden race and two allowance-level events. He won at 1 1/16 miles last out Dec. 19 at Gulfstream and has so far shown to come from off the pace. Chad Brown trains the 5-year-old son of Pioneerof the Nile.
Godolphin's homebred Atone, a 4-year-old Into Mischief colt with Eoin Harty, enters off back-to-back victories from an allowance and an allowance optional claiming race over the Tampa grass, his first two tries on turf in six starts.
Greyes Creek drew the outside, while Atone drew the rail.
Admission Office, Talk Or Listen, Delaware, Proven Strategies, By Your Side, Eons, Sole Volante, and Armistice Day complete the field.
Endeavour
Older fillies and mares will cover the same course and distance Saturday in the $175,000 Lambholm South Endeavour Stakes (G3T).
Counterparty Risk and New York Girl, a pair of Irish-bred fillies trained by Chad Brown and Bill Mott, respectively, are among the eight entries. Klaravich Stables' Counterparty Risk has one win from three starts, all stateside, and missed by a head when second in the Dec. 26 Lady of Shamrock Stakes at Santa Anita Park. R Unicorn Stable's New York Girl made six starts in her home country, winning a group 3, and won her United States debut in allowance optional claiming company Dec. 31 at Gulfstream.
The Elkstone Group's Logic N Reason, trained by Christophe Clement, also enters off an allowance optional claiming win. She won by 2 1/4 lengths over the Endeavour's distance Jan. 2 at Tampa.
Margaret's Joy, No Mercy Percy, Kelsey's Cross, Irony of Reality, and Eres Tu, who is entered for the main track only, complete the field.
